M3_Matt, you of all people should know a Champ when you see it. You only live about 20 miles fromn the Aeronca plant in Middletown where they were built.

Here guys this is the real link. http://www.hobbyzonesports.com/Produ...ntent=ChampRTF

No way this is a cub! I would mistake it for a cessna.

I like that size, and DSM2. I just hope it has enough power and wing to keep it slow and fun.

Nice to see a different license instead of the usual Cessna/Piper suspects. High-wings are great... so great, I already have several. Now how about a 1oz RTF V-tail Bonanza? Or 3ch Biplane?

its DSM rather than DSM2... is that a negative or does it really matter?

Dsm2

It's confusing on the Hobbyzone website, refers to is as DSM2 in one paragraph, and DSM in the next.

* *Everything you need to Teach Yourself to Fly in one box- even the batteries
* *Completely assembled and flight-ready
* *2.4GHz transmitter with Spektrum™ DSM® technology
* *Scale wing rib detail and steerable tail wheel
* *1S 3.7V 150mAh Li-Po battery and DC Li-Po charger included
* *Detailed instruction manual with flying tips included

The HobbyZone® Champ is also equipped with the Spektrum 2.4GHz DSM2™ advantage: The Champ’s radio system uses the same Spektrum 2.4GHz DSM2 technology that is trusted by experienced RC pilots all around the world. With DSM2 technology you will enjoy complete freedom from signal interference whenever you fly. And after you teach yourself to fly, you can use the Champ’s transmitter to fly some of the Bind-N-Fly ultra micro aircraft from ParkZone and Blade. Visit bindnfly.com to see which ones.

The manual states DSM2 tranmitter.

Anyway I don't think the micro receiver board ever came out as DSM, it was either the Kyosho/Perfex 2,4ghz (as in Cessna / Citabria / Early Ember) or straight to DSM2 with later micros.

Hard to imagine that Horizon would take a step backwards on DSM / DSM2.

Too bad they don't make a BNF version at this time.

Would be a Playmate killer if they did. (about the same size).

Come to think of it, Champ RTF at $89.99 : J3 Micro Cub BNF at $89.99 also.

So the pricing actually favors the Champ.

I was just looking at the specs again and something really interesting popped into my mind - I wonder how the champ wing would do on a J-3 fuselage? Wider wingspan, therefore heavier payload for the J-3?

DSM is the 'general' description of Spektrum 2.4 technology (Digital Spectrum Modulation tm as I recall... a trademark)... DSM2 is a specific protocal. (DSM can cover DSM(1), DSM2, DSMJ (Japan)). So, DSM and DSM2 can be used in the same product description.
(there are not any new products on DSM1).
I prefer DSM2 for communicating to the US market, as it is specific, but some folks want to keep mindshare on DSM.
Champs are DSM2 worldwide (like all the other Ultra Micros, etc).

(Oh, also, when a Tx is involved, most of the open stock full range Tx's in the market will talk to DSM(1) and DSM2 rx's, all under the blanket of DSM (generic))

Why would they put this out when the J-3 came out just a few months back? It's just slightly larger, but essentially the same plane.

It is a differnet division of horizon, and i suspect this plane is different in a good way.. more power and better glide.
The J-3 is iconic and will always have a place, even if this plane turns out to be superior
