www.irks.org

and their events page is at:
http://www.irks.org/Events/Events.htm

I flew my GWS pico Tiger Moth and my SLOW STICK-X. First, I should have left my SLOW STICK-X in my car as this model weighing at 17oz. was past the weight limit for this event and second, I am NOT a very good 3D RC Flyer as of yet.

Well, I took off my Slow Stick-X without any issues and began some laps around the inside of the COCOA EXPO building at COCOA, FLORIDA, right next to Interstate (I-95) and the SR-520 exit.

I was amazed of the power my Astro Flight 010, 14-turn and that GWS (3.75:1 ratio) had with the Thunder Power 3-Cell, 1320mAH, 15C, Li-POLYs!! I could maintain flight at 1/5 throttle and anything above 1/2 throttle was pretty scary inside this building....almost like in a vacum!! She floated and yet fast on the controls under these indoor conditions and I should have relax the throttle and most importantly the urge to go 3D inside this building as it really did not have the ceiling for my Slow Stick-X!!!

Well, you guess it , the urge got to me and I gun the throttle and pulled up vertically and began the best hover you ever seen, however, I did not pull up at the middle of the building where the ceiling was the highest and was rather close to me and those watching.......I still had ample ceiling to right side the Slow STICK-X for level flight but, somehow she did not want to do it and the more throttle I placed, mistake. At this point, I had two choices.....loop her backwards towards me and those standing next to me or allow her to tail side.......I picked the tail slide and well, she finally returned level flight and hit the hard concrete floor with most loud BOOM!!!

She landed perfectly on all three points and slightly nose first, the GWS Plastic Gearbox was destroyed but, the motor intact and spinning with no problem but, here's the kicker!!!!

NO DAMAGE TO MY SLOW STICK-X!!!!!!

I truely believe that the flimsy GWS SLOW STICK Main Landing gear wire was able to take all the impact and the propeller, a GWS Slow Flyer 12 X 8 became a 9 X 5 with sheads and feel that this saved my SLOW STICK-X from terrible damage!

I have a GWS gearbox already for my Astro Flight 010, 14-turn to return for duty and rip the "OUT DOOR" Skys!!!!!

Here's some pictures after I came back from this event.

Carlos
You are so lucky you did not bend that precious aluminum fuselage stick.

Carlos, it sounds like you need a MSSX for indoor flying

Covering 101

Multi Color:

1. Cover the bottom of the wing first.
2. Make sure your glass is clean and smooth.
3. First, I cut the pieces of the covering. Make sure you cut the pieces with a 1/4” overlap.
4. Lay the pieces out onto the glass one at a time. Iron each piece to the glass as you move along. Do not forget the ¼” overlap.
5. Once you have all the pieces in place, turn the temperature up on the iron and seal all the seams.
6. Wait for the glass and covering to cool.
7. Peel the covering up from the glass. Do to put tension on the seams.
8. Place the covering on the wing and tack the four corners at the end ribs. Disregard the wing tips for now.
9. Tack the middle. Be sure to pull all the wrinkles out and continue tacking symmetrical points of the wing.
10. After all the wrinkles are gone, start at the center of the wing with the iron and in a sweeping motion work your way out to the last rib. Never apply pressure to the covering in the area between the ribs. Be careful to avoided applying too much heat to the seams.
11. Divide the wrinkles evenly throughout the wing tip. I then use the heat to shrink out the wrinkles. At the same time, I am pulling and stretching around the wing tip edge. I also use my fingers to brace the wing tip to prevent it from breaking. Use your thumb and index finger to grip the covering and the remaining fingers push the opposite side of the tip you are covering. If you have a hot grip glove, it helps. Ultracote Lite is best, but you should be able to get good results with Monokote.

I recommend covering the model with the Ultracote Lite.

Here are the stock numbers for the lite Ultracotes. Do not mistake standard transparent for lite transparent.

It was great flying with you. I wish we had pictures, video of the SS convention in the air. Correct me if I am wrong, but didn't we have 5 SS/SSX/MSSX in the air.

I know Fred got some pictures. Hopefully he will post them here.

Repairs are Complete!

Guys!

Finally completed the repairs on my Slow Stick-X!

Shaved off a couple million's of an inch as the Astro Flight 010 brushless motor is slightly larger in diameter than a typical Mabuchi 370 (speed 300).

Once the inside diameter of the GWS EPS-300C was exact, the Astro Flight 010 was able to slide in without any problems.

A complete test of the power system was made and all control surfaces were excerised citing no other ill effects from the crash at the indoor event of two weekends ago.

Here's a few pictures:

Bring on Lake Hodges. Now I will never been hindered when there is a massive downpour at Hodges. These rain storms always leave a large puddle in the drainage area at the field. Now I am ready for it.

I need to get another X-Gear so I can easily swap out the floats for wheels.

I did not know you had a snake! COOL! I used to catch a lot and keep them for a while. They tame fairly easily! Nice floats too! I gotta do that!

Yup!

Well I maiden the Nite Sticky rip off float plane today. I maidened it n grass, since I do not know where I can fly off of water at.

Anyway, it went GREAT. It is of course heavier, and my CG moved back just. I need to find a prop I am happy with. I had a 10x7SF on it, but that was causing my motor to come down hot. I prop'd down to a 10x3.8SF, and as expected, I lost a lot of Oompff.

Oh well, she is ready for Pop Curtis and any rain that might come.
