If you are on 2.4Ghz RC, first thing you must do is to switch.

i've heard extending (doubling 2x) the antenna wire on 72mhz rx's will give extra range..

5 miles...

well you need a UHF signal TX/RX so Thomas, DragonLink, or EZUHF
Now you need a very good setup for Video signal, so two very high gain antenna(15+dBi) plus an omni antenna for launch(2-3Dbi) Diversity setup for all three antennas plus antenna tracker for the high gain. Then you need a low-noise area to fly in to minimize interference.

If all that works out right and your video camera is not noisy you can do this.

Probably around $1000-$2000 in equipment when it's all said and done.

Good luck.

We have localy a record of 10km, using 35MHz gear.
Transmitter used was a Futaba T9C with an extended 8m antenna, receiver R149DP PCM with normal antenna.

10 KM, EASY !!!

www.dragonlinklabs.com

A long range UHF system is the only way to get RELIABLE RC control at long distances. There may be a couple isolated cases of 35 MHZ going far, but it is under ideal and special conditions, and the rare exception. Trying to fly more than 3 KM with a standard RC system is a very good way to crash or loose your plane. Average RC range is 3 KM or 1.5 miles for normal RC systems, and even less for 2.4 GHZ RC systems.

Have a look on the 2.4GHz range testing thread of Mel Duval.
He already tested a lot of radios featuring over 2.5 miles in air.
