Wow! You are lucky no electronics were damaged! What a tough radio!

He knows he'll be getting his father's day present a few days late but is tickled with the prospect of the DX8. He always got my "left overs" but will now be "on par" with me so he's loving it! Gotta love the SD card feature for moving aircraft between radios!

In a pinch I've still got two DX6is, DX7, 9503 and a few DX5 and 5es. Now I can just use the DX7 for a buddy box.

The fun fly sounds like a blast, my first time there. I have a second option if the weather is bad, a second fun fly in CT at the same time, my old stomping grounds. I hope to see you in NJ.

Anyone run across this before?
Unless you posted this new information afterwards I don't see in your original post where you mention you dropped your radio and then this voltage issue appeared. Oh well. Glad you found your problem and its fixed now. Its for reasons like this I let the right people do the work. What ever you did that broke the antenna and lodge a screw that cause the voltage to go weird on you and then have the gear switch shut off the radio is probably enough of a reason to want to send it in just so them can inspect the radio and give it a clean bill of health, would hate for something else to pop up while in use (flying).

That's because I didn't drop the radio.

I am sure the antenna did not fall off on it's own, what ever happened if it was enough to did what it did you may want to have the radio service for safety sake or assurance that it's ok to use.

I agree. Especially with internal conductive FOD putting a load where it ought not be.

After sending the radio in I thought about the whole thing and decided, I need backup.
What helped is reading about people having old DX6's and 7's.
I found online hobby shop selling DX8's for $299.95 shipped.
This morning I pushed the button.

There are many ways an antenna can break... least of which is the radio getting stepped on by a wife. Don't assume it was a fall that broke Darren's antenna.

Assuming it was a FALL was not the point of my response. MY point was that if something happended to it WHO CARES WHAT but if something happened thats caused broken antenna, a screw being lose and shorting out the gear switch that cause the radio to shut off. Maybe he should have it service instead of asking why the voltage difference and how to user adjust it but looks like its already going to get service anyways.

Thats what I was trying to say. Not that it got drop or anything of the actual cause.

I sent HH an Email today, explaining I have not receieved my label yet.
told them I sent in the request form, got the confirmation Email.
But no label after 7 days.

and this is the response I get back for a simple request.

"Thank you for sending an e-mail to the Horizon Hobby Product Support
Staff. Due to the technical nature of e-mails that we receive, please
allow 3-5 business days for a response. "

All I want is a shipping label

Same here, I wanted to send it in ASAP so I could benefit from this years flying season. Guess by the time I get the label and allow another month for the shipping and service and then shipping back to me.

The gear-power switch issue is resolved.

Given that the gear switch wires attach directly to the power board, and a short to (either high or low) would cause the radio to cycle power just like the power switch....

And given that a resistance in parallel or series with the battery voltage detection would cause a decrease in voltage detected, I believe this is the root cause of both issues.

With the foreign object removed, the radio is functioning perfectly normally.

I like your avitar :-) Have you got a larger pic.

good job on locating the problem and being honest in admiting the mistake.
It happens to us all once in a while.
