Curiously lead crystal was patented back in 1978... so if it was that fantastic why have we not seen it used before?

Grimbeaver,
Patenting does not mean it is any use. It only means it is not a perpetual motion machine or similar, and it has not been patented before. That is all.

That was not my point Mark. My point was that it's not a new idea and if it was a good idea it probably would have been further developed long before now.

The answer to that is very simple and the topic has been beaten numb on scientific forums for a long time now, guess who have been holding back electric cars and battery development the past 5 decades or so...

At least now finally the wall is starting to break, they can't stop it as much as they did before, still... they are pushing as hard as they can.... but eventually electrics will prevail and nothing will stop it.

I don't believe in conspiracy theories. From your smiley I gather you don't either.
But you do make good points. Electric will become the 'norm', but later rather than sooner. It has to. At present it is an expensive and usually impractical alternative, but no more. The only one that is remotely practical, because of its long range, is the Tesla with its biggest battery option. It is the only one where you stand a chance of not having to keep your present vehicle for longer journeys. Not fully there, but could work for many people. Thus not as expensive as it might look. And the only one that has 'pose value' too

There have been many new battery technologies introduced over the years by many labs, but then they run into developmental times and costs. For example, the Rensselaer labs demonstrated a very high capacity battery technology over 5 years ago as a lab demo. Then offset potential enthusiasm by guesstimating a minimum of 10 years to develop the technology to the point it would be practical for use, and at least a hundred million bucks to start production. And shortly thereafter, China placed export limits on certain needed rare earth elements which they are nearly the only source of, further driving up both developmental costs and production costs. And if they are like many engineering personnel I worked with, their cost guesstimate didn't include the figures for a corporate profit margin and executive compensation and bonus package.
