Has anyone tried the new P-51 from Hobby-Lobby?

Has anyone tried the P-51 from Hobby-Lobby? It flys on GWS IPS motor.

Which P-51? The Alpha or the FSK ones? If you mean the Strega one, I just ordered this the other day so I should be receiving it by the end of the week. I can give a full report then.

Hi David,

I'm working on the review of the Strega P-51 for Hobby Lobby.

This is a beautiful replica of the Fantastic Models' Rare Bear design by Flying Styro in the Czech Republic. The specs are very similar.

I hope to fly it soon!

Hello Greg:

It looks like a great plane. Let me know how well the plane loops as the video shows it just performed it. Please also advise the airfoil and can it be built flat?

I just ordered one and can't wait. We have couple P51 at our field to do some formation flying.

Finally got mine together over the weekend. Awesome kit. Much improved over the Rare Bear kit as far as parts fitment and overall assembly process.

Although I haven't really flown it yet on the IPS-A motor, I'm thinking of putting in a dual IPS motor in. Anyone know if it will fit? The front nose cowl area is a bit narrow. Not sure if the wider dual IPS motor will fit in there.

Anyway, here is a pic.

Rare Bear with a M-100 on a EPS300 GB

Guys,

Don't ignore the TERIFFIC performance of the M-100 motor with a GWS 5.33:1 GB...uses the same pinion from the GWS 300 motor that comes with the EPS-300 C gearbox (GWS Zero and P-51 standard). Save the GWS 300 motor for the bigger planes...

M-100 hybrid is about 10 gm lighter than the dual IPS drive, uses the stick mounting system too, just need a little shim for the larger sq. hole in the GB mount. No worries about burning out motors frequently, heat sinks, or dual complications. M-100's like a little more voltage, that would kill the EDP-50 motors in a hurry!

Have been flying mine for about 1 year, stock FS three blade prop (very cool looking and tough), normally on a pair of Qualcom Li-on's, but recently went up to three QC cells (10.8v) with EXCELLENT results, like nearly 50% more rpm on same FS three blade prop (4600rpm) vs the two cell M-100 (3600 rpm), which is still much better than the 3200 rpm you will see with the IPS A drive and two cell QC settup.

Turns the RareBear into a really healthy hotrod, with all the great slow speed advantages retained. Flying in wind that would have grounded me before, as the extra power is always on hand but rarely needed. So nice, just like the glow model days...

Same setup on the cleaner Strega and Corsair would be incredible!

Very simple prop adapter to use the neat spinner for the three blade prop...

These are great kits, but more power requires a little more structural stiffness...

2mm CF rod and some tape along the wing LE and stab TE takes care of too many G's for a few grams...

A little Elmer's polyurethane glue along the seams and around the firewall have eliminated all the weak spots, and a bit of 2" clear tape protects the belly during landings.

Love these foamies!

Does anyone make a warbird with the same type of flight characteristics as the Rare Bear or Strega? I would definately buy one. Else I'll have to paint over the Strega.

Interesting you mention the EPS-300 unit as I ordered this bad boy last night already. It's good to know you are using it as I wasn't sure it would fit on the IPS motor stick.

Is the M-100 motor swap really necessary though? According to GWS website, the EPS-300C2 (4:1??) @ 7.2V is supposed to put out 8+ oz of thrust. I think this will be plenty for me. I just hope it will fit inside the front nose of the strega (much more narrower than the Rare Bear's nose).

Also, I've already added plenty of clear tape on the LE and on the bottom of the wings (front and rear). Do you think this is enough or should I add some kind of rod to the bottom of the main wing?

i'd like to do the power upgrade but..

my firewall and surrounding foam is very weak. any suggestions on how to strenghtne the foam up there around the plywood firewall?

Only for those who are frugal. An M-100 replacement motor costs ~$8 each. Replacement motors for the dual IPS are ~$9 each or ~$18 a pair. Consensus is that M-100 motors last at least twice as long as IPS motors. So for every ~$8 you spend on M-100 replacement motors, you are going to spend ~$36 on dual IPS replacement motors. Guess which combo I selected?

Hyperknight: The Qualcom Li-Ions won't power the 370 motor that comes with the EPS300C gearboxes, either will the Kokam 1020's. The M-100 pulls around 3-3.5A, where the 370 would be 6-8A. A280 motor (EPS100C) on 3 cells pulls nice, and a replacement is cheaper, yet than the M-100, IF you can stand the weight of 3 cells... I'd go for a low ratio, like the A or 1S, to get the amps up to 3 or so...

What I meant by the motor swap being necessary was for the stock motor that comes with the EPS-300. Is the M-100 motor better than the one that comes with the EPS-300?

Genebond,

I'm running Etec 1200's (2S1P) and according to BPP's site, they are good for 6 to 7 amps continuous with 9+ in short bursts so I should be ok with the EPS-300C.
