Help!
SA Depron frustration

Hi guys,

I do a lot of building with 6mm Depron, but it is very difficult to get a reliable supplier in SA. Anybody have any alternatives (supliers or materials).

Marcel

Hi Marcel,

I was under the impression that MadModels always have lots of 6mm Depron? Have you found a supplier?

Hi Christie,

I've started using isoboard hot wire cut into 6mm sheets as an alternative.

Hi, because of the high price of Depron and it not being generally available, I have tried using ceiling tiles (bought from Builder Warehouse) 500x500mm about3.5mm thick,8 sheets (2sqm about R120) What I did was lamin either 2 thicknesses or 3 depending on use, have built a Divinity (see Foam Scratchbuilds) and a profile. Both yet to be maidened.

Hi

I buy my Depron from RC Pilot 0119793504.

In some cases I also use Iso board.

Cheers

As an alternative building material you could also try a product called corroplast which is available from Maizey plastics. I am seriously considering building a plane from this stuff as it is available in sheet thicknesses from 2mm up to 12mm.

Correx/Coroplast is extremely heavy. It is really only good for combat sloapies in my opinion. I'm not absolutely sure but I think 3mm correx in SA can weigh from 500g to 750g per square meter. 3mm Depron weighs about 100g per square meter. I bought some 2mm Correx from Maizey's a few years ago and it weighed more than the 3mm that people bought overseas, also it was extremely flimsy.

Depron is becoming easier to get now. A friend bought me some Depron Aero from Micton's in Somerset West (they get it from Mad Models in JHB) and the price is the same as if I had to buy R1000 worth of it from the USA...

Wespack in Alberton now stocks Isoboard without grooves at R46 for a 25mm board and R89 for a 50mm board. (900mm x 600mm).

Been using foam-board for my 2 profile jets... 3mm not too hard to get but 6mm...
Last 6mm sheet was R144.00 & 3mm R80.00 (think sheets are 1050x720... or something)
Any-one know where to get this at a better price?

George

Hi Georgy, why dont you cut your sheets yourself? I use 10mm Aluminium angles on a piece of chipboard, so I can cut 10mm sheets. If I now want 6mm, I just use a piece of 4mm glass under the foam as a spacer. If you consider "foam board" to be expanded polystyrene, you can try Automa in Isando, they have two seperate warehouses full of the stuff, as well as some EPP, but the prices you quoted makes me think its Depron. In place of Depron, use Isoboard.
