How to get consistent power on the bench?

I am trying to do some speed 400 motor tuning and was wondering what I can use as an alternative to battery packs to run a speed 400 motor at a constant 6-7 volts. The packs don't keep the same voltage for long enough to test different motors with the same voltage input. I have a desktop power supply that powers my chargers. Ideas?

Running motors for long periods on the bench is a great way to ruin them. Better to do the testing in the air.

To answer the question; certainly one can use a power supply as long as the voltage is correct and the supply can hack the amps.

Power supply... I have a 35 amp adjustable voltage supply. Extremely handy. I don't run motors for a long time, but it's impossible to get accurate reproducable measurements for good test comparisons using battery packs. The power supply can also be used for breaking in brushed motors and powering battery chargers.

Cheap alternative - a large 6V gellcell. That's what I use.

I tested a bunch of S400s (and a couple of S480s) a while back. My method was to set the tacho, ammeter, and whatt meter up with a camcorder pointing at them. Then video a 20-30 second run with each motor on an 8x2400 pack (I used two packs and alternated them, same prop each time ... moved from motor to motor).

Then play back the tape, pick a voltage that occurs say 15 secs into each run, freeze frame at that point, and you can write down the amps and rpm at exactly the same voltage for each motor

for the responses. I think the video is a great idea as I'm always hurridly writing information trying to beat the voltage drop. A 6 volt gel cell should work as well.
