If you can, I'd go with a toothed belt-pulley arrangement. Soooo much quieter than gears.

Thanks!

The Master Airscrew part is very quiet, and low cost. Also nice that it can be easily fitted with different ratios.
Furthermore, there is a huge range of 500-size motors to choose from, from hot Speed motors to low speed/low current rock -crawler types. See for example:

The MFA design is ridiculously overpowered and expensive, and it has a poorly designed frame to boot-- it flexes and the belt doesn't run true.

That looks like it will be one rock solid hull when you are done. I think if it were me, I would go with a belt type gear drive. Very cool build dude...

Yeah I've looked at em just 2 expensive! Be nice for the massive torque available but way over priced. Would'nt mind being able 2 buy the belt drive without the motor, but can probably make up some sought of belt drive out of bits from somethin like 1 of those mobilty scooters the crazy old people use! get some pulleys and belts from the spares dept!! Hmmmm Might look into that......

Well, actually you can buy the gear drive without the motor. First one right at the top.
