Wicked Powered Starmax A-4 EDF

Got this in the mail yesterday It is the A-4 from Starmax in Blue Angels color scheme. This is a small sized EDF and uses a 55mm fan unit. I originally ordered this from Banana Hobby:

http://www.bananahobby.com/1968.html

but they called and told me after I ordered it the Blue Angels color scheme was out of stock and it would be a few weeks before the next shipment arrived so I went ahead and ordered the airframe only version from Aerial Hobby as they had the Blue Angels color in stock.

The kit is very nice. I like the fact the fuselage halves are not glued together so you can work out your radio installation ahead of time. The stock 55mm fan is cross between teh GWS fan and the EDO type fans. The mountng systme is similar to the EDO style so a Wicked EDF motor with an EDO plug will mount up to this motor. The stock rotor plug included is not for a 3mm shaft motor and was probably meant to mount on a 2.3mm shaft inrunner.

My only dislike of this model is the ducting sizes. The inlets and outlets are rather large for the 55mm fan. I measure the outlet at a whopping 125% FSA and the inlets about 135% FSA. I almost feel this model was initially designed for a bigger fan unit and then it was suddenly changed. At 64mm the areas would be 100%FSA inlet and 90%FSA outlet and for a 60mm fan they would be 113% outlet and 125% inlet. For this first build I am going to use the stock an but I will also install a tailpipe. The outlet for this fan should be about 1.7-1.75" diameter and the current diameter is 2.13" so somethign needs to be done. Juts fo rthe heck of it I tried to stick the Wicked 60mm EDF fan in and it looks like it will go in pretty easy so I may do a seconds build dependingonthis one goes.

My plan is to install the Wicked 5400 motor in the stock fan and run on a 3S2200 lipo. The battery will fit nicely and the GWS EDF55 on 3S is about 400 watts with the Wicked 5400 so I expect similar but will post data shortly.

Are you sure you are logged in? Does it show your name and address on the right by "shipping estimator"

Yep, logged in. No, it doesn't show my name/address over there. Hmmm, maybe it takes their system a while to recognize you?

Yes...

So if you put the white one in your cart right now it's at what price?

Have you already purchased from them in the past? I think it said I was a "silver" member. Maybe you're gold or platinum

dang....i say stuff the 60mm in there don! this is a tiny model...im sure its going to ROCK!!! yeah....typical chinese inlets/tail pipes...this is what ive been screaming about...you know how much BETTER it would perform with properly sized ducting? geez, people just on me for saying things like this....aparently, they enjoy lackluster performance! :O

PS....got a BI3600 im sticking in my RCL cougar..1300W is nice, but its a draggy airframe, so it really cant use all the power. a nice 850W will be just about as fast, and way less amps. im really bummed you stopped selling that one...maybe you can bring it back in the future (one of my dads purple ones...ps....were still flying the crap out of them with no issues

Wow, how did you get 200 points before buying anything?

Oh, please feel free to delete all these posts of mine that are littering your build thread...

If they fly this on the stock outlet it will be a dog with that 125% FSA outlet, the outlet is almost the size for a 70mm fan! I am on the fence for this build, I typically like to use the stock fans before going the mod route so people know what to expect just dropping a motor in. I may fly stock fan first then go to the other fan to see how it compares.

A little dab of weight and the fan is balanced! I ran it up with two lipos, my new 30C 2200 3S lipo showed 460 watts and 41.8 amps at start up and 430 watts and 40 amps when settled. I then tried an older 3S2200 lipo around 20C rate and got 430 startup watts that settled down to 380 watts.

I forget the specs size-wise on this one, do you have any pics with other popular planes for reference? A little smaller than a HP F-16 right?
