Guillows Hurricane Build

Here is my Guillows build. It was my first Balsa build so its kind of sloppy, Instead of using the elevator pieces that came in the kit i just made a one piece solid balsa tail, but i used the rudder that was included. Surprisingly the covering whats that bad. there are quite a few wrinkles tho, but it was IMO the funnest part of the build. Instead of using Dope i used half water half white glue it apply the tissue. For painting i used acrylic paints with an airbrush and brushed the camo on. I still need to make the bottom white and add the decals. Feel free to ask any questions.

Looks nice. Good job on your first Guillows build. Are you planning on electrifying it? Looks light.

Cheers -M

At first i was going to make it electric i even put carbon rod spars in the wings (you can see it in one of the pics). Then i realized i dont really know what im doing when it comes to purchasing electronics. So i just made it a static build. I just weighed it on my cruddy scale and its about 50 grams. I didn't do anything to lighten it just straight up followed the instructions. I have an ME-109 and a P-40, Im going to make the 109 static so i can have a battle of Britain hanging from my ceiling. ill attempt to make the p-40 an electric, maybe my building skills will improve by then

I'll give credit to anyone who uses tissue. Looks fine. I know what it would look like if I did it. Iron-on makes us look good.

These Guillows planes from this series are difficult to convert, so it's probably better to display it, unless you've used light wood with redesigned tail surfaces. The built up series with the P51 and Skyraider will come out lighter. I even built a second 16" FW190 from this series, and gave up on it when realizing the nose weight needed. I had it flying, but was too heavy to be controllable. The plane also had started at around 50gms without gear, as I wanted a sheeted fuse look. Even with feather light balsa, it was still horribly tail heavy. The thought has crossed my mind to bash it into a FW190D, with a longer nose and span. Even with tissue, it's difficult to not end up tailheavy, unless you build very light tail surfaces, definitely without the Guillows parts or wood.

I thought about sheeting it as well. Working with tissue wasn't that bad. Not sure how well it works with dope, but with half water half glue it was pretty easy. You defiantly learn as you go along.

older hairspray was made from laq a derivative of the lacquer beetle (very gross)

but it works excellent for adding tissue to models and sealing the tissue from being porous ., much lighter than white glue ps real nice guillows

Ahh i assume they dont sell that anymore. I just used the glue along the edges and then just sprayed water all over the tissue and let it dry and it tightened up. Thanks i should post pics with the decals on it.

orange rx without case (4g) 8$
tiny 10 gram motor 60 watts(10g) 7$
5 amp esc (10 gram wired) 6
battery might be tough but id consider using

it is a rx battery but light and with such a small system would last a few minutes
