What Airfoil For A Flying Wing

A friend of mine has a foam cutter and has offered to cut out some wing cores for me.

I'd like to have a few extra 30 inch wings on hand. Something to use all these s400 motors on. I'd like the wings to be along the lines of a Razor.

His question was, "Which airfoil do you want?" "I don't know. How many do you have?" I asked. "About 700." was his reply.

Anyone know which airfoil would be best for a 30 inch flying wing?

Oooh htink i just jump in right out of my depth...

Ok im kinda new to all this but ive been reading quite a bit, I belive the aerofoils you are looking for are probly along the lines of

Tsagi 12% or Zagi12

Eppler or E 180, 182 or 184

I'm sure there are quite a few others that could be used it really depends on what sort of performance your after ie I would presume the Tsagi 8% could also be used & I think this would result in a faster wing with lesser lift..

You would need to add some washout 2-4 degrees, ie the trailing edge of the wing tips would need to be rotated up around the LE by aprx 3 degrees. This is done to reduce the stall speed.

Im sure these probly a lot ive missed (or have just got wrong) but I thought id share what ive learned so far...

Take a look at the flywing wing airfoil bookmarks in my collection:

MH-45

This is a thin airfoil but provides high-performance.

Same airfoil used in the Wedgie.

The only problem is the airfoil is pretty thin so I have to use a carbon rod spar to keep the wing stiff.

I have used the Zagi airfoils with a lot of success.

I suggest you get a copy of Profili, register and you can run and compare different airfoils. Great program and if you register, you can print off a template to cut foam cores.

MH45 is the name that keeps coming up. I think that will be the way to go.

Thanks, guys.

MH45 is specifically designed for flying wings. This question comes up a bunch in the Slope soarer forums and MH 45 wins almost every time. If I remember correctly the MH 45 is used on the Wedgie flying wing.

The guy with the foam cutter used compufoil to make me some MH45 templates. I'm going to transfer them to formica and try my making them by hand.

He also said that if he had time, he'd try making me some wing cores tonight on his foam cutter.

This should be fun.

FLYING WING AIRFOIL

I experimented using a symetrical airfoil that I had templates for and a semi symetrical airfoil that I had templates for...I used the semi for the root template and the symetrical for the tip template...both were thin airfoils, worked out fantastic and haven't changed since.....does outside loops as well as reg. loops ...flys inverted as good as right side up.....I cut a 48 " epp wing that weighs about 10 oz. all up weight...Being light I cannot make it stall off a wingtip....

Yup! MH45 is specifically designed for flying wings and is a standard.

What airfoil is best that has reflex?

Well now you got me thinking, is there any airfoils that has a fair amount of reflex built into the airfoil?

This would allow me to have less reflex in the elevon.

Would this buy me any better performance at all?

Just wondering...Henry

Try the EH line of airfoils for the reflex that you want.

My personal opinion: don't bother with the MH45 if you are not planning on sheeting the wing...to gain the max from this airfoil you need to build it fairly accurate (just look at the trailing edge of the MH45 and compare it to the trailing edge of a Zagi ) and, as it has been said it's fairly hard to get the wing stiff enough.

Wouldn't use the EH series... I had a wing with a EH 1.5 / 9 (I believe) and I never got it to work right.... I think Siggi (www.aerodesign.de) has the explanation....and he also has an airfoil (Sipkill I believe it's called) that is designed specifically for foam wings and is supposedly much better. Haven't tried that one yet.

Cheers,

Bernie

...and something else: if you had an airfoil with a lot of reflex - yes, you wouldn't need as much 'up' elevons...but you have higher built-in drag. On slow wings it won't matter, but on fast wings you tend to have a 'start" position of the elevons and you decrease the 'up' as the wing gets up to speed....

flying wing airfoil

The MH45 or the ZAGI is not a pure flying wing airfoil
the "ZB" is. if you want to see it visit http://olgol.com/les
