I've also built a foamie for the AMA show indoor flying. Maidened it today. It's a Yak 54 40" . I built it around a 2204 /14 motor so I needed to keep it to 16 oz weight limit. . I cut holes in it. , chopped the w.s. down to 35" ,cut another inch off the cord , powered it with that motor on a 450ma 3s 25c Gens Ace on a 8x 3.8 APC slow fly prop . Used 1-tower Pro 9 gr for ailerond , and 2 HXT 500s for the tail surfaces pull pull ,and this is what I got

Ah, ye old motor discussion! I and friends like the DW2217-1100 best on our 40" DW's. Wicked power, same weight (~73gr) and no waiting! Here is a chart off my test bench showing it with 9x4.7 and 10x4.7 APCsf props. My Juka (old style 6mm fuse) currently weighs 16.4oz with a 1000mah 3S batt so that is what the second chart is based on.

Thanks for sharing!! Did you really notice a lot more difference? Was it just a speed difference or were you able to do different maneuvers?

Hey Chris,

Huge difference. The 1100 gives instant acceleration, far more than the 950. I fly the 10x4.7 and the extra speed is nice but the magic is in the punch out from hover, the flips or any manuever you need super acceleration.

I've flown the 950 (as well as other expensive non-DW motors) and I will never go back

I see at this time it isn't on the DW site but I think if you email Mike he will get it for you. If he can't, PM me and I'll tell you where you can.

Ughhhhh......thanks for the feedback....maybe I can convince the wife for an early Christmas gift.....I do know what you mean about the punch out from a harrier. I was flying yesterday and was worried about ripping the motor out it felt like there was so much torque.

I'm using an 10.4.7 Prop...before I get new lipos, maybe I'll try an 10.8 in pitch and see if that gives more authority

The 10x8 ( I think) may be way too much. Try a 9x6 too. The Mars motor you selected is a good motor but not a good size for this application. It is equivalent to a 2212 or 2213 (Assuming the listed size are the outer dimensions.) With a 2212 size motor you will be missing the torque necessary to drive a larger prop. A shorter prop will spin up quicker and the extra pitch will give the plane more acceleration but it will cost you in Thrust.

By the way, someone mentioned that they thought the DW motors were high quality and I can tell you that is true. Very true. These motors come with a 4mm shaft and three sealed Abec3 ball bearings. You can't find these two features in very many motors of this size unless you spend a lot more money. (I just wish they had a bolt on prop adapter!)

I've flown 9x6 and 10x4.7 and I couldn't imagine going down to a 9" prop for a 38-40" plane. The extra speed just isn't worth it, IMHO.

However...the thought of going semi-skeletal on a 38" plane sounds interesting. Think I would rather go milled rather than covered.

Well thank you for that Bryan... We put about 5 more flights on it today . With several guys in our club taking the sticks and everyone has positive reaction to a foaty, slow, but responsive flying machine that it became..

Totally stoked...so I pulled off my first harrier tail touch today followed by an inverted tail drag...got it dirty, but it was totally worth it...still jazzed and adrenaline pumping (if you can't tell)

Well we all know foamie shockies with decent power systems fly quite nicely.. but reduce their flying weight by a decent amount and a whole new flight envelope opens up to you. I was pleasantly surprised . This is probably my 6th or 7th one. And I like it alot

I fly war birds (P47 Thuderbolt and P51 Mustang ) , and a Radian Pro glider but I always take my foamy 40" Yak 54 with me to throw out and do some 3D flying because it handles like nothing else does. Getting another foamy built up now and looking down the road at a Biplane foamy as well. As for 6 or 7 of them ya never know

Havent got a watt Meter yet but will get one soon..in the mean time i guess i can try a prop size higher..will be ordering new Batteries this weekend....It's worth every effort to me to get this Foamy to Fly comfortable...

Been running the nano-tech 1300 mah 45-90c batteries for a while now and have been really happy with them. Recently picked up four more nono-techs but in a 1300 mah 25-50c discharge rated battery that were a very good price on Hobby King gonna give them a try.

Very nice build there. I was just down there recently visiting my brother in law in Corona. Maybe next time I head down that way I can bring a couple of my planes down there and hook up with you guys for some flying.
