Help!
HobbyCity replacement for non-VXL motor and esc (Rustler)

I have an older model of the Traxxas Rustler and have been having troubles somewhere along the lines of the motor/esc/nimh battery. Everything gets very hot very quickly and I can't run it for more than about 2 minutes where I used to get 10 or so out of it. I replaced the motor with the stock motor with no results. I am thinking that it might be the battery... I would like to replace all three with something from hobbycity if someone knows a good set up with about the same power and speed as the stock Rustler (non-VXL) Thanks for any suggestions.

how bout this for a setup?:

http://www.hobbycity.com/hobbycity/s...shless_Car_ESC

and this for a motor?:

http://www.hobbycity.com/hobbycity/s...Motor_w/sensor

im planning on using this same setup in a few vintage buggies, and can also use the esc in my emaxx

hobbycity has brushless 35amp setups that would provide similar power. the ezrun, I think there might be a turnigy also.

you could also check at swanghobby.com and nitrorcx.com similar stores and prices but some different combos/variety.

That is great but I really want something cheaper than the stock (non-vxl) esc. It sounds like that set up would be nice though. Especially with the $15 motor!

esc at hobbycity:
http://www.hobbycity.com/hobbycity/s...idProduct=7186 OR for a couple more
http://www.hobbycity.com/hobbycity/s...idProduct=7188
and a decent motor (I have one of these): http://www.hobbycity.com/hobbycity/s...idproduct=6530 and you might want to add the program card that is included in the below combos
http://www.hobbycity.com/hobbycity/s...idProduct=7187

at swang (their pricees include shipping):
http://www.swanghobby.com/hobbywing-...-1-pr-707.html OR a little faster
http://www.swanghobby.com/hobbywing-...-1-pr-146.html

or at nitrorcx:
http://www.nitrorcx.com/ezrun-brushl...--35a-esc.html
http://www.nitrorcx.com/ezrun-brushl...--35a-esc.html

my personal favorite of that bunch would be the 60amp esc with the motor and program card from hobbycity. 2nd would be the 9t combo from swang or nitrorcx, which ever comes out cheaper.

what can you compare the power to on that hobby city motor so I can get an idea of what it will run like?

I find it similar to my traxxas vxl motor (good torque) but noticeably a little slower. I have run it in a rustler and also in my 4wd hpi rs4mt; ran great in both with big and little pinions. never hot.

oh, cool. This one is the one that my 6 year old son drives so I don't want a lot of speed anyway. I have a Stampede VXL for myself :-)
How many cells did you run with this motor? I might only run 2 for my son if I pick this one up? Any suggestions on the pinion gear for what I need? Thanks so much for all of the info.

note, that motor needs 5mm pinions, a little hard to find. I use a 15 tooth on the rustler that my kid drives, keeps the speed in check, keeps it all real cool too. I recently purchased the parts to switch to 32pitch gears, easier to find 5mm pinions in that size and they are beefier. I have not switched anything yet though. I bought the biggest 32p traxxas spur I could find, think it was a 70something tooth, made for a nitro rustler, and some 14 tooth 32p 5mm pinions, made by traxxas, might have been for a summit. if you can find a smaller pinion it would be better still.

the alternative is to just drill out a 3mm pinion to 5mm. I plan to do that for a tamiya I have that uses 32p metric. I can't find any 5mm in that size.

after typing all that I realize it might be easier to get a motor with a 3mm pinion shaft. I'll see if hobbycity has any cheap ones

well the price jumps up a bit: http://www.hobbycity.com/hobbycity/s...tor_10T_3900Kv plus I am not as crazy about the ezrun motors, they are actually 380 size in a finned can. but saves you from any other work. If you are handy cheapest route is to bore out a pinion yourself. Those 5mm 48pitch ones are really hard to find anymore.

I looked at the motor veggieslinger linked and when running with sensorless a few people reported cogging. the ezrun/turnigy esc is sensorless and that motor is designed for sensored operation. BUT it is a 540 motor with a 3mm pinion shaft.

its a shame hobbycity doesnt have a cheeper sensored car esc to go with the $15.00 motors. im gonna splurge and buy the $75.00 sensored esc so i can use it in multiple vehicles. should work good in my emaxx 3906

I am a little jealous, when I bought one it was $25, now it's down to $16.
