Airtronics SD-5G 5 channel transmitter spotted

As stated in the title, i found online, much by accident, that airtronics.net is selling a new radio, the SD-5G, a 5 channel, 2.4Ghz, radio for $119.99 US.

LINK

Very little info on the website about this radio, however the website shows it as "in stock". The website does not include a picture of the radio, and i cannot find any more information on the web, let alone a picture, for the radio.

I was wondering if any of you knew anything about this radio, and if so, tell me a bit of what you know about it, preferably, with a photo of the radio.

IMO, for 119.99 + shipping for a 5 channel 2.4Ghs radio, i would rather spend ~30-50 dollars more to get the RDS8000 instead, since it has 3 more channels, and is still 2.4Ghz, and uses the same recievers, but that's just my 2 cents.

a cheap radio that can buddy box with the SD-10G wouldn't be a bad idea, maybe that's what this is.

I bet the SD indicates that it will take SD memory cards too. I hope it is simply a 5 channel version of the new SD-10G. If so, I would buy one. Not everyone needs 9-12 channels.

No, the SD in SD-10G stands for Sky Dynamics. Haven't been able to find out who or what Sky Dynamics is, but it's printed right on the front of the radio.

Too bad it won't work. Only SD-10G's can buddy box each other.

According to the product flyer, the SD-5G can be used as buddy box together with the SD-10G.

That is news for sure. Definitely not what we have been told. But certainly good news. For the RDS8000 as well?

Can you post a link to the flyer?

...it is the importer of Sanwa radios in the US. According to Airtronics, the Sanwa SD-5G is in stock.
I have both radios the RDS8000 and SD-10G. I am not sure about getting a 3th soon. Maybe a SD-12/14G in some future. If I had not bought the RDS8000 I might have considered the new SD-5G for slowfliers etc.

i agree with that statement completely. considering you can pick up a rds8000 for less than 150 USD (not including shipping of course), the SD-5G just isnt worth it, considering you loose 3 channels, and alot of functionality (if the x's for expo, etc are any indication) for only 30 USD less. hell, if it HAD expo, etc, then it MIGHT be worth it, but all these mini and micro warbirds out there simply NEED the expo at the very least to fly without them getting all squirrely on you.

now, if you already have an SD-10G, and are looking for a BASIC box to recommend to pilots new to the hobby, AND want to train them with your SD-10G, then this works perfectly and is well worth the money.

the SD-5G is still a better deal than a DX5e, 6EX or DX6i, but it's made to look less attractive by the RDS8000 and it's excellent pricing.

I imagine that in the not too distant future they will introduce an SD-7/8G that will be slightly more expensive than the RDS8000, that's what this product & price suggest to me for the future.

not entirely unreasonale, the RDS8000 could afford to be 30-40$ more expensive and still be the best value in it's segment, and airtronics can afford to move a little upmarket with their prices now that they're more (re)established and have a bit higher profile. I imagine a potential SD-7/8G would be an attractive budget friendly radio for quite a fiew people.

this is all, of course, guesswork: I've got no inside gossip to base any of this on, just my interpretation of their product & pricing.

...I guess, the large retailers will carry the SD-5G for less than 119$. How about 99$. Sounds resonable to me. With such a price tag the SD-5G would hold its own position.
