Davis Manta Fighter

I was just looking in my notebooks and found this plan. This plane allways caught my eye, it's still hard to come up with more than vague information on it . I think it would make a great floaty of a foamie, does anybody out there anything on this plane?

I have been looking at this for long enough, I think I may try taking a shot at this. I,m thinking first off a thick profile fuse and a undercambered wing or would a kfm style work , and use 1/10 th dimensions for size. Go the ret route and build it and then see how much weight it has to chose motor and gear. Fifty inch wingspan would make it almost as big as GPW'S taube, big flys better right ?

I forgot that I had this file from the plan page on a related version, a Manta glider from 1945.It,s just a slight jump to a powered one I think, what do you think?

Here is a couple of pictures that ronnie olsthorn has done on his site 3-D Skyraider. It shows what an operational manta looked like if it had been built in 1945.Cool huh?

I thought that I'd seen where somebody made a slope flyer of the Manta.

Great articule on the Manta fighter. I wonder if there is any other little bits about it out there, did they get to a real proto-type before they quit ? It has a easy to identifly shape in the air, graceful, yet it just has a little bad-ass throwed in.Its been on my to build list for years.

Here's a popular science article from June 1942 about the contra-rotating props on the Manta:

Great!, some more interesting facts about a little known proto-type. I think it would of been nice to see the later versions of the piston powered plane designs get to come into their own before the jets took over.

Interesting article!
This plane is a good application for the counter-rotating motor

Because I am going to build the manta glider from balsa, I switch my posts to the following thread:

Great Flying Plane

Greetings,

Designed and built a glow powered version for RC Combat, flew great but was not very well liked by purists.

Then I aided a friend to build a slope version, and it rocked !! He has flown it at some of So Cals most pristine flying locations. It was entered in the PSS Fest on slope forum.

It flies GREAT, regardless of slope or glow powered.

I cut mine from foam.

I plan on building a larger glow version with retracts and all, in time...in time.
