Here's yet another way to stain balsa.

If you have an inkjet printer and refill the cart yourself, you can use the ink to stain balsa.
This piece below was done by filling a 2 litre coke bottle cap with denatured alcohol and adding about 3 drops of the magenta ink. Then I brushed it on adding more coats as I moved from left to right. The far right inch or so has a very light coat of gloss polyurethane sprayed on it.

The red and blue work well. I'm not crazy about the yellow.

This adds no weight and the alc. doesn't swell the balsa.

Oops, the flashpath went to sleep and the pic didn't post. I'll try again.

Adding more ink will make the color brighter of course.

The same thing can be done using conventional color fountain pen inks available at office supply or craft stores. Great idea. Color and no weight gain.

you can also use a Minwax wood stain touch up pen found at most any paint or hardware store. It leaves a beautiful wood finnished stain, with almost no recognizable weight gain.
