Re: Legionaire Shuttle photo, Anyone else have some?

Definitely not a hoax! I watched Cecil Haga, the designer, fly one
at the Tangerine back in the late 70's and it was competitive with
most of the sailplanes of that era. In earlier Tangerine's Cecil
flew his Legionaire so he did have other sailplanes to fly. I assume
he flew the Shuttle for the advertising. The Legionaire was an
expensive model for the era and more difficult to built than the
Olympic or Paragon so I assume that the Shuttle was a cheaper and
easier to build model for the novice. The Legionaire sold for
$89.95, a lot of money for a model in that era. It was also
difficult to cram the large receiver, servos, and battery we used
back then into the tiny pod. Batteries haven't got smaller but
servos and receivers were about twice the size we use today.

Re: Legionaire Shuttle photo, Anyone else have some?

Somewhere in my photo archives I have a snapshot of Cecil at one of the early displays of the Shuttle at TCJC South Campus. March '77 I believe it was. The version he was showing was the 72" non-poly wing.

I found a kit at a garage sale for $20. Someday I'll 'git-r-built'. Actually a very easy plane to scratch build. Slopes great in light lift.

Please send your photos to me, (Scans are fine). I'd like to do an RCSE
article on them.

Re: Legionaire Shuttle photo, Anyone else have some?

You've probably all seen this before, but it bears repeating... I
built a lot of Legionairs for Cecil, and others. For Cecil, I would
build 2 identical, and he'd pick the pieces he wanted, and I'd keep
the other one, and fly it or sell it to buy radio gear. I even built
the wings for the Chaparral, which was a really off the wall design
with a stubby fuselage, a steeply raked fin, and an inverted V tail.
However when Cecil approached me about building a couple of Shuttles,
I refused... After all... I had principles... 8^)... My OFB Bill
Maserang and I were talking about this the other day on the phone, and
we were laughing about the Shuttles, and the fact that they actually
didn't perform all that much differently than the Legionairs. he has a
couple of them, I think...

I have some pictures from the 1980 NSS contest at TCJC in Ft. Worth.
If I can, I'll scan a couple and post them. I have 1 more Legionair to
build... but it ain't a Shovel... er.. Shuttle... It's really
hilarious that this thing is in the news...
