I don't know if I'm an expert in anything, but I do use an arm winch. I use the Hitech HS-7950TG It is a standard size, and fairly light weight (68g), but with 403/486 oz/in of torque at 6v/7.4v. The transit time is sooo quick compared to a drum winch. Want to jibe? Head down a little, flick the sails in then out (.13sec/60*), and the sails will go across very fast! My 1:2 purchase sail arm is 3" from center of shaft to center of block, to get enough travel.
There are several similar models with less torque and a lower price. I wouldn't get much below 300oz/in torque if you still want enough pull when the wind gets up. Now if they will only make a small rudder servo that is rated for 7.4v, we'll be set! I use a voltage regulator to knock mine down to 6v just for the rudder. I have to rewire my boat, till then, so the sail servo will use the whole 7.2V that my A123 cells are putting out, instead of the 6v from the regulator. I am missing the Blow Out regatta in Dallas this weekend, where it is supposed to blow the dog off the chain this weekend! The US IOM webpage should have updates. http://onemetre.sbmyc.com/forums/ |
