Interesting conversation on IOM's especially as relating to skipper skill vs. boat design.

I truly feel that the IOM class is one of the most competitive in the world for RC Sailboat Racing. I think it is one of the reasons that the class has grown worldwide and attracts the best skippers to sail in this class and one of the reasons that people are always trying to push out new designs, which are often eagerly gobbled up, there doesn't seem to be any fall off regarding interest in the class. The peripheral builders and vendors for IOMs far outnumber any other class. The fact that it is NOT a one design is one of the reasons the class has remained at the forefront of competitive sailing.

Others can throw darts at the class, but simply put, if you want to sail against the best... you sail IOM's... in any country.

What kind of vehicle do you use to transport your IOM? I'm wondering what I would need to get to fit 1-2 boats, 6' sail boxes, and 3 passengers. The only ideas I have are:
- giant roof box
- mini van, and fold down the 2nd and 3rd row seats on one side.
- Maybe a 4 door truck?

Two IOMs with the fins off easily fit into any hatchback or any car that has a fold down split rear seat and trunk pass through. Rig boxes (if they are the typical angled ones) fit between the seats. Also, lots of room for your radios and other equipment. Only limitation is you can only fit three people (including the driver) in the car.

My last vehicle was a Ford F350 crew cab/full bed pickup. It could carry 6 people, and easily carry six boats and rig boxes (and the kitchen sink) in the bed.

When I bought my current car (Toyota Venza), I went shopping with a tape measure to look for a vehicle with 73 inches clearance from passenger seat to rear door. The rear seat is 60/40 and so carrying three people, three boats with stands, three rig boxes (laid flat), plus gear (on top of the rig boxes) is not a problem.

I can fit 2 boats and sail boxs into a camry and I can still leave the child seat in place (60/40 rear seat). I had a Hilux dual cab but the sail boxs used to stick out the back.

A roof rack allows you to buy a less expensive vehicle.I drove a mini cooper.

2007 Chrysler T&C with Sto-Away seats. Just back from the pond, US1M Venom and IOM Ocka, fully riged. When we go north for the summer, we are taking 5 boats, with rigs. 1 IOM, 2 ODOM, ! Star45, and 1 RG65. Plus of course, clothing, equipment, and a cat with her cage.

What's the waiting list like?

At a guess I'd say that delivery is expected a couple of days at the most before the V9 is announced.

I see the Chienz won The Anna McKenna Memorial (GP event) at Kogarah Bay NSW. 3, with 3 entered and they finished 1st,2nd and 3rd she's looking to be a very competitive boat.

Also Jeff Byerly has been busy building a 'one off' design IOM called Destroyer based on the his Marblehead Dreadnought that has chines and reversed bow he states 'It was not designed to be a replacement for the Cheinz, but as a test of some principals a bit removed from the current crop of boats'. She does look cool though!

I expect "Destroyer" will be available just after the V-9 and right before the Chienz II
