About the hawk video- I do believe that is most definitely a Swainson's Hawk.

Great photo comparisons! I do believe all of you are right (xbted, trees, and dawsonh in the Alula Teaser thread). Looks like a Swainson's to me.

I would not consider this bird a fussy eater...bats, mallard and gopher are just a few of it's favored treats.

Maybe someone should update the wiki to include the notorious Dream Flight Alula on it's menu.

My alula Hits the slope :D

Woooooowooow, Micheal is my heroe . Yesterday I flow on the slope for the first time in Switzerland and my Alula was with me of course the wind did not really come but what a Blast. THe alula can flight in almost no wind and can fly so good in thermics, no mather how small they are, the plane just bumbs up , another friend brought his so the alulas dominated the sky. I was trying some fast passes but it can not retain too much energy, so it can go three laps max but is lots of fun. Not so many time the Word perfect has been so well used as to describe the Alula. mmmm Weasel someone

The fun/price ratio of this bird is unbeatable

EZ

After seeing the video with the Swainson's hawk, I knew I had to get an Alula. During high school and into college, I was a falconer and flew red-tail hawks and an occasional kestrel (yes, I was state and federally licensed), and worked as a volunteer doing wildlife rescue, so I really love seeing these vids of the Alula up there soaring with the hawks. Anyhoo, I ordered my Alula a few days ago and it should be here anytime, and I decided to go with decorating it (tentatively) like a ferruginous hawk, which is a large buteo that lives in my area (but not too close).

I can't wait to get it and try it out, it looks like so much fun!

Welcome to the Alula fraternity xbted. You will love it! Best money I ever spent. Be sure to post pics of your Ferruginous scheme.

Your source of inspiration is cool. I'm sure you will have a blast with your Alula. I can't wait to see your Ferruginous hawk paint scheme. Here's another not-so-active thread you might be interested in "Unofficial Bird (Animal) Wing Loading and Aspect Ratio Database". I was hoping some informed pseudo-ornithologist/RC nerds would take the idea and run with it but so far, no such luck.

I just got my Alula! But I need some guidance here because I'm unsure about the shape of the nose. My Alula has arrived with a pretty pronounced underbite- the bottom half of the nose sticks out probably 2/32-3/32 of an inch past the top half. Is this normal? I know I need to sand the flashing, but I don't want to sand of a part of the plane if I need it. I'll try to post a picture.

You may be looking at it upside down. The openings for the battery and receiver are on the bottom. The plastic piece goes on the bottom, so the lip you are talking about is on the top.

Unless yours is really goofed up.

The bottom looks good but from the angle in your pic the top definitely seems out-of-whack to me. It looks like the top is foam deficient.

Make sure you have pictures from a few different angles before you proceed...

You could trim the bell skid and test fit it to the bottom, then sand the lip to see if you can get it looking satisfactory without throwing off the belly skid fit on the bottom. If you're happy after some sanding, good deal, if not send Michael some pics and see what he can do for you.

FYI, to post a pic using picasa web albums...

Check the "Image only (no link)" box
Change the size to large
Copy the text in the "embed image" box
Goto advanced in the RCG chat box
Use the "Insert Image" button at the top of the reply box, paste, ok
Preview to see if it all worked correctly, then submit
