The Dream-Flight Alula Thread

We once used the "Alula Teaser" thread but it's been closed for reasons unknown (has since been re-opened). I hope the old thread will be reopened. If not, here is new place to post your Alula related stories, tips, pics, videos, etc.

For those unfamiliar with the bird it's a HLG "urban glider" that many use for flatland and light wind slope/slermal soaring.

Official website can be found here...Dream-Flight Alula

Here are a couple pics of my Alula pre-maiden...

I maidened my Alula couple of weeks ago, and I can't seem to get very good flights out of it. My launch is decent. Probably about 70 feet, but my flights average only 20-25 seconds, in dead air.

With my MiMi, I average about 50-60 seconds, in dead air.

I have an Alula and a Gambler AG. I find the Alula easier to launch (SAL), but the Gambler gets longer flights in dead air. They seem to get equivalent launch heights (I'm lousy at discus launching, so far). They weigh about the same (6.7 oz), the Gambler seems faster, and the Alula is much more prone to damage on landing.

I wonder if there is a particular way that I should be flying, to get better duration. BTW, do most people bother sanding off the little molding pips, or leave them on. I didn't bother doing anything to them, but it seems like they would add a lot of drag.

Some may scoff but I bought/built mine primarily for slope/dune soaring so I don't really bother hucking it into dead air. If I remember correctly people in the older thread were getting around 40-50 seconds in dead air. Since you're getting good launch height that leads me to believe you may have a heavy or improperly trimmed bird.

I sanded mine off but the foam seemed to get quite fuzzy in doing so. Maybe I used to coarse a grit, dunno. As a side effect I feel I didn't really cut any drag seeing I now have more fuzzy surface instead of a smoother/slicker bumpy surface if that makes sense. In addition it sucked up a lot more paint than I imagine it would have without sanding AND tape does not like to stick to it. That being said, does anyone know if 3M 77 adhesive is safe on arcel? I've seen mixed reviews here on RCG. Some say newer variants have acetone which can be harmful. Has anyone tried it on their Alula or other arcel planes?

I just weighed mine, and it is 5.8 oz. This is right in the stated range of 5.5-6 oz, in the instruction manual.

As for 3M77, I'm guessing that it will be fine, with arcel foam. CA doesn't do anything to it.

i can believe anyone getting 50 seconds in dead air with an alula. mine are about 20-25seconds, and its in the required weight range and trimmed out right with a slightly forward cg. But as soon as their is a little wind she goes on for minutes.

They would be OK. I would not do that unless I were going to be flying on a slope all the time. For thermals I would want it as light as possible
