Here's mine (ain't he cute).
Know where he's from (I sense a wave of nostalgia)?
I don't know about multi pics (what are those?), but I would think that the easiest way to get animation would be to use an animated gif.
Although I must say that if everyone used a full-on animation I would probably turn the avatars off.

To do an animated gif, you would need a gif animator program such as 'Gif Animator 3' (I have it).
But animated gifs take up a lot of space - an avatar with 5 frames would take up the same space as 5 unanimated avatars (or more). So it might not be a very good idea in the interest of a quick loading page.

Ben C has good taste in avatars! Unlucky for him that he is not Swedish! Then he could have used the same beautiful avatar as I use...
By the way: mine is a 250 byte GIF - could be the fastest avatar on the E zone!

I've been trying to post an avatar, but I get an error message saying "That image is too large. The maximum dimensions are 75 by 75 pixels." My jpeg is 75x57 pixels and 4489 bytes.
Maybe I'm missing something...
