Info:-

Plane - Icon A5
Radio - Futaba 36mhz
Vid Tx - 500mw 2.4 AvionicsRC
Vid Rx -Fat Shark

Nellik - if I were to get a new module in 36mhz I would definantly go with a synth one, It just makes things easier I think.

Just saying Hi.

Hi guys and girls been flying planes and helis for years but always wanted more. So stupid me stumbled across a video in this thread of the tricopter following the mountain bikers and also a guy on a oval flying.

And it all started again, I had to do it, I was like a kid with a new idea.
So the tricopter build started and I am now waiting for some more parts from HobbyKing to arrive and I should be ready for a test flight. My tricoper is mainly built out of aluminium as I am lucky enough to have a lathe (And a understanding Wife).

HK 500 tail booms for arms.
Hobby King 401B AVCS Digital Head Lock Gyro
Hobbyking SS Series 18-20A ESC

I think I have chosen the wrong motors as my machine with radio, batteries, camera etc will be around 1.4kg. Any advice would be appreciated.

1.4kg is a bit too heavy, P*rn. My sign-guy (wooden, with HK equipment) build is about 750grams with 3S 2200 battery, and about 1 kilo with a GoPro and vidTX on board. Your weight will fly, but will require heaps of amps (=heat + short flights). I get about 7 mins out of mine. ALso make sure that hub is nice and stiff - if the arms can flex too much, you'll have stability (gyro gain) issues. kV is a bit high - aim for 750, otherwise use smaller props (say 10X3.8). Signguy is now recommending these http://www.rctimer.com/index.php?app=goods&spec_id=145 for the motor - I am just about to order some myself, though the DT's have worked well for me to date.

Where is Melbourne are you?

Cheers

Roger.

Stuffed up

Weight my tricopter again with everything but the speedcontrollers 1kg. Dont know what I did the first time when I weighed it. lol
I milled some of the frame away to save a bit more weight.

And I am in Bairnsdale Victoria.

I think arm flex might be giving mine the slight wobbles. How did the carbon tow work Rog? If its good, I might do mine.

Started work on the FPV ship on the weekend. I cut some foam cores that will just be taped up (no fancy finishing). I dug out a tower pro $14.95 combo I got ages ago but never used. Spun it up and got 1.2kg thrust which should be heaps. It's going to be a twin boom pusher with 5 servos in the wing. Ailerons, centre flap and "A" tail on a "V" tail mix. That should leave the fuz empty for batteries and camera stuff.

If I do the Rx antenna extension and double it back on itself along the wing, does it defeat the purpose of extending it? Or is it like winding the length around a rod like with CB whip antennas?

I might get a pic for y'all if you're interested

Nah, haven't flown this one much at all. I'm happy with the plane it flies ok but the sink rate with the Go pro on it is prety high asthat camera is like a big air brake on the nose. It really doesn't help puting bricks on the nose like that. Might have to look into reorganising the fleet electronics and to put just the go pro on the easy or make a new plane just for the gopro.

I was thinking of making a new plane for the gopro, I was thinking probably making a DHCommet for this. What you think of that? Would be an interesting bird that one.

I just bought a used Futaba 9C yesterday with the 2.4ghz & 36mhz modules and receivers.

I know this is a very basic question but you would think they would put it in the manual or be able to find it on google but it does not appear to be there.

I have other 2.4GHZ receivers but not with the pins on the end like on the R608FS.

The question is - I suspect the negative pin goes to the rear on the receiver. Can someone confirm this.

Thanks

EDIT: Just did not want to blow it up. I was correct but found a REAL futaba lead with the extra bit of plastic on one end (key) and that gave it away.

That sounds like an interesting build, I think it would be interesting to see the result from the extension double back. I don't think that it is optimal to do the double back but I guess it couldn't hurt to try it out. I tried to go from wing tip to tail to wing tip with an old radio I had, It worked well till I powered up the VTX then it killed the range of the reciever in the plane. Mind you I was using an old glitchy RX so I couldn't really tell if it improved anything. From there I went to the DX7 so haven't really played much with the 36mhz stuff and I have only just got a newer futaba 36 which I am only just starting to test now with the Icon.

That's one of the first cameras I bought for flying. Tough little blighter that one. Just don't fly after the sun is over the horizon, as soon as the sun dissapears the ground will go really dark and hard to see, the contrast between ground and sky is too much for it.

Wonder how that compares with the hobbyking $15 plus postage one but no case.

Probably the same?
