720x480=NTSC DVD Quality.

So I guess 720*576 would be the PAL Equivalence of DVD Quality

recording standard (high) settings

http://rapidshare.com/files/32320710..._recording.AVI

i connected the video out of my laptop and recorded that feed.
Original file can be downloaded at geekbrief.tv the number is mentioned int he start of the clip.
That would allouw you to judge loss of quality.

Please also download GSPOT, it will take the file and decod what its resolution and kbps is.

I read on another post it displays REC* on the screen while its recording.. Is there a "display" button on the remote that turns that off/on?

A recorded TV show is not a substitute for the high bitrate demands of FPV
video. It only takes about 2-3Mbit/s to handle even an "action" show on
TV, but at least twice that for a mellow ride on a plane. You'll learn nothing from
this sample.

in theory your right

while i agree with your point using fpv as example the result would be also be influenced by the camera used and any losses of the transmitter.
Once the weather imprioves and my new batteres finaly arive from hobbycity il will be able to do a flight but so far this is what i can do.

I don't think anyone is going to argue with that. The best fpv footage I've ever seen has been taken from "ON BOARD" HD video recorders. Were just trying to gather actual end user data from transmitted video to ground. Then the guys can make an informed decision on a ground station recorder purchase and not be surprised when it doesn't meet expectations.

PS. What is the lightest HD Cam out there right now?

special thanks to SoMoney

i really like the way you handle this thread !
every good info is report back to page one with pics+links
your the master !

this is the #1 thread about the specifiq subject

(you should name it complete GROUND portable
rec.... because many user still think that onboard stuff do this task LOL)

i'm so demanding about specs... that i chose a mini laptop because i
can record 720X480 with unlimited bps ! and also use it as a second monitor
to fly with (11.6")

if you ever consider mini laptop (10 or 11" inch display) i have important
info about it ! (CPU load...video card...to capture from USB capture device)

Please publish it - rather important information. A usual netbook (atom 270 or 280) is good enough or faster required? What codec is the best for a slow cpu etc.

I have a Gateway Model: LT2030U NETBOOK which has the 1.6Ghz Atom in it.. One of my very earliest recordings was done on a this netbook. Being Married w/Kids my FPV hobby is quite spontaneous and only when time permits. I found using a Laptop or Netbook as a flight recorder to be cumbersome and more of a hassle than a purpose built DVR unit.

I'm not sure if others share that view so it is just my personal opinion on Laptops as flight recorders.
