I gave up using HDD after I discovered the quality of DVD. I now use a Sony portable DVD burner, and am hoping to convert the rest of the tribe to this format.
http://www.geeks.com/details.asp?inv...6-FB-R&cpc=SCH Also my Baru (Br3002, or 3003, not sure..) had an annoying habit of slipping slightly out of synch occasionally, and putting the bottom 10mm of screen at the top. Never found a cause for it. Its now collecting dust with all my other recorders that didnt make the grade. Let me know if formatting works for you,' Cheers Frank |

Sony DVD recorder Pros: - High Quality video - Good price - Easy to transfer to PC Cons: - Somewhat bulky - Have to "finalize" disk before ejecting or you lose everything!! - Doesn't record through static (?) Lawmate PV-500 ECO Pros: - High Quality video - SD card, so don't need to "finalize", capture, etc. - Very small, compact design Cons: - Expen$ive! |

Geez, I may just stick with my aiptek. It pretty much does everything, and it's only cons are overly sharp videos and 4gb max cards. But I don't use it for anything more than a reference. I fly with a go pro. |

Ok,
Formatting a disk takes about a minute. When you insert a disk it does a disk check every time, about 30 sec. I use +RW DVDs. these are multi session and dont need to be finalised. Erasing a disk takes about 30s. After erasing, the disk neds to be reformatted as the device formats according to whether you are storing pix or video. When you press stop it takes abut 30s to do its thing before you power off. If you switch off during recording you lose the file, just like most HDD recorders It will record static up to a point. If the image is too broken up, the unit will pause and wait until a decent image is available. It doesnt stop. EG: I crashed recently, and detached the VTx plugas the wing ripped off. I forgot to switch off the recorder. I went home, collected another plane and returned 15 mins later. When I switched on the second plane, the recorder started recording the image. There was no gap in the recording, it looked like an edit. I also appears like an edit when it clips unviewable video, and it has to be very unviewable for the thing to pause itself. This saves some editing. It runs happily on 3s lipo. I use Movavi DVD editing suite. I see all of the above as characteristics, not flaws. Its not an HDD, and its not an SD so it has different requirements. Heres a sample, but remember its been compressed for Vimeo. Camera was an SN555. The actual playback at home is very close to DVD quality and is only limited by your image received. This is my 6th recorder and I cant see the need for anything more. Cheers Frank
