Don't know if it is in the "list" yet or not but I recently got a Vivitar dmd-p20 and have only good things to say about it.

Received my Vosonic VP6060 flash recorder today
http://www.vosonic.com/product.php?P...&kind=1&id_1=8

It's not too shabby (especially as it cost me less than 30GBP).

Applied the latest firmware and tested it with a Sony 540TVL camera
Single button press to start or stop recording.
Output is viewable whilst recording input.

768 x 576
25 FPS
4.3 mbits/sec

640 x 480
25 FPS
3.6 mbits/sec

Results are the same on either a high speed SD or CF card.

Looks quite good in the goggles and on screen after recording.

Nigel.

Hi Daemon, I'd like to get your opionion of these 2 recorders for suitability as a ground based recorder for FPV.

I think the 2210 is for ATSC TV and the 2230 is DVT-B. The 2210 has Analogue recording in HQ mode of 69.2MB/min 720*480, 9364Kbps.

Sounds like nice specs, particularly the bitrate, but to be suitable for ground
based recording it needs to be able to record through static, and there's
no way to know that until someone has one in hand.

Recorded a flight with the PV-1000 today. Using its 1280x960 setting, it appears
to range between 9-14Mbit/s. Averages out to about 13 minutes per Gigabyte.
It offers the sharpest image I've ever seen from a digital recorder and I'm quite
impressed. I can't wait to try it with a higher resolution camera than the 420tvl
RCV922. I can't compare it to MiniDV quality, as I stopped using that years
ago (just too inconvenient).

I'll try to post up some raw sample clips, but because it uses ASF file format, slicing up
the raw files is a little tricky.

I had a couple different passengers on my second set of goggles plugged into the AV
output of the PV-1000 and they were super impressed with the quality of the pass
through signal. It was also cool after the flight to just replay segments of the flight
back to someone else, also using the passenger goggles, while I could look at the big
bright high res LCD screen, and explain to them what they were seeing ("and we got
really close that hangglider in about 1 minute... "). That said, there seemed
to be an subtle banding effect on the replayed signal, which I suspect has something
to do with it having to downsample back from 1280x960 oversampled recording
back to an analog NTSC signal for the goggles to understand. I was worried that
it might be in the recording, but it's totally clean on my computer.

Ian, that sounds real good.

Does it pass your set requirements?

* One touch record
* Record through static

$599 is a bit steep though?

As I described in my earlier review, yes and yes.

I picked it up for $500, although I believe the place I ordered it from has
since raised the price.

I think it has been confirmed that the Piano DVR does not record reliably through static.

I just tried recording a test video with my V-Mate/ground station, but the video flickers up and down... it's just the recording though, because it's fine in my goggles. I tried using deshaker 5 times with different settings but it just makes it worse. Any suggestions?

Here's a raw 1 minute clip from the Lawmate PV-1000
http://thud.us/videos/rc/lawmate-pv1...e-1280x960.asf (right click - save as)
Play it in VLC.
In the process of cutting it out of the original clip without re-encoding it seems to
have lost the ability to seek properly, but the original files are fine.
BTW, the constant hiss, is because I put the microphone in too much airflow.

And here's a longer edited vid I posted on Vimeo, downsampled to 640x480 and only 4Mbit/s
before uploading.
FPV Soaring at Zion - new Lawmate PV-1000 recorder (8 min 30 sec)

It's a little hard to judge quality based on Vimeo vids, but generally the motion is smoother
and the fine details (which my mountain has a lot of) are more crisp, particularly
through high motion scenes (which I also have a lot of, due to rapid camera
movements and turbulence).

I think the real limit of detail here is actually the camera, which is only 420TVL.
I'm looking forward to trying it with my VSN505 (or VSN500) with its 550 TVL and better colors.

Hi

I have bought the same DVR, for my laptop is taking up to much space and is a hassel carrying around..... well i tried it out, but i was dissapointed by the low video quality it gave me. and when i start recording, the piqture will turn blur after a few seconds ......I dont have any picturequality problems on my laptop, so back to the lap top again

Do you have the same quality problem?

Damn it... looks like we bought crap.
Mine hasn't arrived yet, but based on your input I've toned down my expectations to rock bottom.

Buy cheap, buy twice?
