Martin Mars and Philippine Mars Photo Documentation

I thought these photos might inspire someone to a highly detailed Giant Scale project.

These were taken a couple years ago (August 10, 2007) on Sproat Lake, which is located near Port Alberni, British Columbia, Canada. The location is 4917'14.42"N 12456'12.57"W and is somewhat centrally located (east-west) on Vancouver Island, about 1/3rd of the way up the island from the south end.

My boys (11.75 and 8.5 years old, at the time), and I, had just returned from a 4 night, 5 day kayak trip from Telegraph Cove with Orcas (Killer Whales) swimming under our kayaks. We detoured to Sproat Lake specifically because we had the kayaks, and I wanted to get close up pictures of this enormous flying water bomber.

The history of these aircraft is quite interesting, and well worth looking into. There are only two Martin Mars water bombers in existence, both located here; a third having crashed whilst fighting a forest fire.

These photos were taken with the scale modeler in mind - being as up close as one might be able to get to these majestic beauties. While most photos of this subject are from a distance, I tried to capture every little detail - just look at that rivet pattern on the stern! As you can see, this is the Philippine Mars, the other was not present at the time of these pictures. I understand there are differences between the two, especially in terms of paint scheme.

I hope you enjoy, and are inspired by these pictures, and that they may be of some use to some of you.

Amazing planes! Wish there was a kit for this plane. But guess one day might have to just make my own.

Standing beside one is just as exciting. There just one big plane!
