search for the micro drake by thayer syme. it uses the gear from any of the parkzone indoor planes, and a 7mm motor. will take off from the water.

I'll second the Drake. It was a Ken Willard design that someone reduced to micro size. I saw a video of the Drake being flown at an electric event. Really nice. Thayer Syme at the helm um... sticks.

Another thought is that ParkZone is coming out with a micro J3 cub. A lot of people have mentioned an interest in putting floats on it. Even if PZ never comes out with a set of floats, someone will, and if not, it's practically certain that a few will be converted by individuals. Should not be too difficult to make a set, and I am going to get a J3 and will probably give float making a try myself.

I am seventy-two, and when I was a kid you could see J3's on floats passing overhead fairly often. I lived in the Bronx then and I think a lot of the traffic was from the City Island/Throgs Neck area going to or coming from Little Ferry in New Jersey. There were lots of float planes at both locations and way less controlled airspace. Today you are unlikely to see floatplanes around NYC.

For me a J3 on floats is a nostalgia issue. I also have a set of unused floats for my GWS pico Tiger Moths (two in boxes, in the white, the other that I used to fly video cameras, including two unintentional water landings.)

I'd build a Drake myself, but my workbench is a disaster area. I really have to stop buying every new toy that comes out.

After I get the J3 that is.

use a parkzone vapor and bendy straws. use a oil drip tray from autozone its 2 by4 feet and about a half inch deep perfect frow seting up and moveing out. and the best part if you allready have a vapor then it will only bey about $10 to say you are flying off water.

pete,

what type of floats are you using for your Pico 'moth?

I've been toying with the idea of a brushless PTM with floats for a while and think i'm just about ready to jump.

I have not used them yet, but I have a set of GWS floats. I had some nice flights over a lake with my video cam mounted and was sorry I had not put the floats on, but they are still under the workbench at my flying buddy's house awaiting inspiration.

Here's a link to the video of my second flight over the lake:

The plane had already been dunked once at that point. I don'[t know if the water or a failing battery is what cut the flight short. One worry was that the plane settled nicely upright, with the camera out of the water. I wonder if, on a quick landing with floats it might not have flipped, and possibly hurt the cam. As mentioned all the gear survived and worked fine once it dried out, but the camera is a couple of orders more complex than all the rest of the gear.

I get the same...
I will see if there is another source I have. I was looking at FlyRC's free plans a few weeks back and not a single one was working. They are mostly working now!

Matt Anderson and David Payne from Horizon had the new Cub with floats. David got his ti fly. So a new J3 with floats can be done. It was a hoot to see flying off of Spectrum Lake at the JR Indoor.

Also a Vapor with lights flew off the lake. Joe and Cindy Malinchak flew it as well as Bob Selman. The floats on the Vapor needed to be sealed since the foam Joe used did soak up some water. I think there are some pictures of both planes on the JR Indoor thread under the coverage. SleepyC shot lots of pictures and you can see many of the planes that were float flying.
