Off topic, How good a builder are you?
OK.
You fall off a cruise ship and manage to get ashore on a small island. You discover an old military base. There are several buildings, a supply of tools and materials. wood, aluminum, brass and assorted hardware. Also several aircraft engines, some small and some large. The is a adequate supply of fresh water, and food, furits in the jungle, birds, sea food, even a wild pig or two. (Jewish people disregard this), I'm Jewish so I can say this. ![]() There is shelter in the building, some matches and kerosene, oil, even some gas, that may be ok? There are work shops with tools and even a generator that may still run. In one of the barracks you find this copy of Model Airplane News: http://www.theplanpage.com/Months/2110/2110.htm After waiting a reasonable time, lets say two weeks, and no one has come looking for you, would you use the resources you have to build a boat or an airplane? You know that there is an inhabited island less than one hundred miles to the north. A: a boat B: an airplane C: set fire to the place and hope someone see's it D: sit on your butt and wait to die One more question. If you built an airplane, would you test fly it, or just load it up and go for the Hail Mary approach? Last edited by Kimber; Nov 04, 2009 at 09:09 PM. |

Well first I'd have a tough time deciding on which to build in full size. The Consolidated harkens to my vintage desires but could be considered a bit ostentacious. So it would likely be the Gordon Light or the Air Trails Trainer. And the Martin is just too much work.
But in the end it would be a waste of time. After all, who's going to be there to hold the prop from unwinding while I climb in? I suppose I could arrange one of those engines to wind the motor. But I can't fathom how I'd build a winding stooge big enough or strong enough to hold the airplane while winding. Um.... can you toss in a copy of an old magazine that has some boat or at least a flying boat plan in it so I can just build the hull and engine mount?

First, I would wait until I really, really needed to face civilisation again. Then I would build a boat and sail it to the next island, but that would be after a long, long time on that island...
The other thing I would consider would be a very large reflector, driven by the generator. With the aluminum, one could build a flasher that could be seen from outer space! |

Brad said he would use the resources to build "Private Property No trespassing"
signs! ![]() ![]() ![]() He is an old hermit anyway. He lived alone on a 41' boat for 17 years! |

Since the cruise ship line would waste no time sending me a letter. Denying of course the possibility of any refund for leaving the cruise early.
I would just hitch a ride out of there with the person that delivers the letter.Hitting an unknown island with no navagation equipment or the islands exact location even with some equipment is the absolute last resort to me at least. I like the powerful reflector ideal and a little patience. |

A boat would be the smart move, possibly an air boat since you have the motors.

I would build an aeroplane, because I know how to do that, and I don't know very much about boats at all. The hazards of the sky are well known to me but I have little experience of the hazards of the ocean. All I know is that lots of people who don't know much about boats seem to get into serious trouble in them, as soon as they leave the calm environment of a river or canal or estuary and head out into the open sea.

I don't need to fall off a cruise ship...I would even pay for staying a while at such a place....
A boat would allow me to do repairs/adjustments/beeing "creative" during the trip, so I would choose that, as a ticket home. If choosing to build a plane, it might be "my last trim-flight".. ![]()
