Arizona Jets Event - Nov. 20,21,22

The Race Is On

Superstition Air Park

http://www.azmodelaviators.com/Jet%2...et%20Rally.htm

A neat video of last year's event.

20th Annual Arizona Jet Rally (6 min 16 sec)

Note: There is a speed limit, your jet must fly 80 mph or faster to fly in prime time. Time to show the beef, who's gonna blurr the tube in the radar gun?

From Experience at Superstition Air Park.

It's a great flying field. But....

So, I went alone to another event two years ago. I needed a spotter and one of the club members volunteered. Everything went great, except I landed a little hot and a little long. My Hurricane went past the end of the pavement and then disappeared. Just like magic, puff it was gone. I thought worst case it would hit the bushes just past the end of the runway. Nope. Then the spotter tells me, "oh there's a ditch, you can't see it"

As you can see in the video, the jets are landing left to right. This is not the normal pattern, the normal pattern is reversed. If you land long and fast, and your brakes don't work, you plane will disappear into a 12 foot deep ditch just past the paved end of the runway. The ditch is invisable and it's just before the bushes (speed trap) .

The 80 MPH requirement has been relaxed. They just want to make sure the jets can fly the pattern. This been a very EDF friendly event. Last year 50% EDF and 50% turbine.

Does that mean I'm OK fllying the pattern slow as long as I'm doing it at 10000 feet Bob?

Pattern flying ; Left to right / right to left is determined by the prevailing wind direction. Yes the left to right pattern is more forgiving if a landing is long, but the runway is plenty long, and I would advise if you dont have brakes on your jets to take some landing aproaches before it is really time to land. Always a good idea to take some approaches at a field you are new at.

Technically speaking, if you're landing long and fast, you should execute a go-around and try again and keep going around until you get the model slowed down enough so it doesn't go off the end of the runway.

I am bringing the Carf T-45 Hawk, and the Nitroplanes Starfire. I don't know how much flying I will do, but, I will be thrilled beyond just watching the turbines and fast EDFs do their thing.

I have not flown the Hawk yet, waiting until AZ jets. I was going to fly it at our field, but, the approach is short, nobody at our club has much experience with ducted fans, jets, or even larger planes... Believe it or not, I am one of the most experienced in that area...and that is a sorry state of affairs. LOL I don't want to risk loosing that plane because of a stupid move. I really would feel more comfortable with experience standing next to me...and I plan to ask at the AZ event.

I'll be there bright and early Thursday morning to show the chicken.

What does your plane, or even what do you look like? I don't want to be wandering the pits looking for someone that resembles Jackie Chan.

Oh, so you've heard that story when Gene and Steve H and I were at the restaurant and there were these college chicks and so I dared Gene to...uh, and then the cops came?

I'll be there, I wish with a brand new airplane but scratcbuilding always takes longer than I want, so I'll be driving my 63" F-22 and my 62" Haoye F-18 conversion. The 65" F-15 I'm scratcbuilding wont even be close.
