I would like to see a couple different size catagories. Its much easier to build a complex, well finished jet in a larger size due to the thrust to weight ratio. But as for foam, balsa, composit, hybrid, or concrete, who cares.

Just my initial idea on a few classes that are easy to classify

Scale
Non-scale
Small (2B defined later)
Big (2B defined later)

Hi Gene,
I got a design almost ready to go so I'd be in and I know a couple of other RCGroup folks here in Saint Louis with new designs going that would probably enter also.

I would suggest 2 classes based on wing span and keep the rest up to the designer. If it looks great, flys great and wins, what does the building material matter. Who really cares what materials it is made of???.

32" WS and under
over 32" WS.

I agree with open construction, but wingspan is not the greatest way to catagorize jets. Think F-104 vs. P-80. If they had the same wingspan, you could fit a few P-80 fuses inside the F-104!

Keep sport jets and scale jets separate, or bonus points for scale?

What about just breaking it down by airframe size and/or fan size. Ex. 50-60mm, 70-90mm, and then 100mm+. Obviously a lot more goes into make a 100mm size jet than a 50mm, so it is hard to judge them the same....regardless of what they are made off.

Oh yeah I am in BTW, so let's finalize the rules and start designing!

I am mostly worried about KnifeLiddle.....you come up with some unique creations with your kit bashes. You have to start from scratch on this one though buddy.

I like the fan size categories.

Have 2 - up to 80mm and 80mm+

I agree that the construction shouldn't matter. I personally don't like working with foam but if it looks good and flies well, indeed, why should it matter?

I agree it should be kept simple.

I like Matt's above and below 80mm sizes but I would add belly floppers vs. retract equipped airframes to make four catagories. As far as I'm concerned fiddling with retractable gear is as much work as the rest of the airplane. It wouldn't be fair to pit a flopper against a retracter.

Hmm.
Here is my take on it

2 catergories: Scale and other

Additional point(s) awarded for retractable landing gear (all catergories)

Additional point(s) awarded for cockpit detail (scale only)
Additional point(s) for multi fan models (all catergories)
Additional point(s) for scale features; i.e. parachutes, airbrakes, opening canopies, LE(slats) and/or TE flaps, etc. must have at least 2 operational. If it has swing wings or thrust vectoring, that quailfies as 2 (all)

We can add more...or less
I think it rewards the guys that put in the extra effort but doesn't discourage anyone.
