EDF Design Contest for 2010???

I want to know if there is any interest in an EDF Design Contest... It has been a while since we had one, and i was lucky enough to win the last one.

Lets bring back some good times on here with a Contest........

I would like 3 classes of pure EDF, class 1 Foamy and class 2 hand/bungee launch, Class 3 Gear/Retracts. no pushers since EDF means EDF.

Whats your feed back guys, or is the forum soo far out of wack that nobody want's to do it.

Gene

Sounds like a good idea Gene!

I have something in the works and would be willing to throw my hat in the ring. Whether I finish it in 2010 is another story .

Sounds like a good idea. Most don't finish, but a few do and it ends up producing some neat stuff. I'm still out of wack though!

You'll have to define "foamie", since most like to put glass on them and then they're not much different than an all glass plane. Last contest I tried was an all wood class. Remember when planes used to be made from wood?

maybe define "foamie" a little better then. LOL. since foam covered with glass would tehnically be a composite, maybe that should be included in the composite section, if there is one. I suppose that would be under class 3, cause most would put retracts on a more expensive jet.

I'de deffinitely be interested though, since I've got a few ideas up my sleeve for the off season. I'M IN! ! ! ! ! ! ! LOL.

Sounds good to me. But I am not much of a designer so I will watch.

Foam could be limited to wing, tail cores only. I would rather see a well made and crafted all wooden model than a CNC milled foam job anyday.

Foamy is foamy. If you cover it in glass it is still a foamy.

Foam core wings on a balsa or fiberglass fuse is not considered a foamy.

But a foamy can be under class 3, gear/retracts. Then it won't be in the foamy class.

Foamy class is basically depron type EDF

I will come up with some rules for the contest eventually. I don't know if I will run the contest or not. I will be talking to a few people about it. I was thinking of having a panel of judges as well as having an online voting system split 50/50.

This contest will probably be called the 2010/2011 EDF design contest. That way people can get their maidens done in the spring time of 2011. This should be plenty of time.

Gene,

Subcribed.

What constitutes "design"? Shape?, Details?, Kitbashed, or scratch built only?
Are dwgs to reproduce it necessary, or can it be a "one off"?

Can it be a scale airplane or are you looking for sport type EDF?

Then you are not qualified as a balsa bascher, but you can make a plug out of it

Great contest Gene!
I have been thinking to go underground for my current project, but a contest is a nice twist. Still I am at the start of the learning curve of composite moulding so I am not too sure I am able to speed the pace up within this timespan. I was planning composite fuse/foam cored wings. I already cut 39 formers for the fuse.

LuvEvolution7.
You are absolutely right on that glass covered foam is a composite construction, but try to get the moderators here understand that!

what is the difference in making a negative mold or a possitive mold for the epoxy/glass composite? It is still "composite"

Tecnically a balsa-covered foam core wing is also a composite construction.

Wikipedia says:
Composite materials (or composites for short) are engineered materials made from two or more constituent materials with significantly different physical or chemical properties which remain separate and distinct on a macroscopic level within the finished structure.
