Mega Motor Damage?
Hello,
I have a Mega 16/15/3 on a Mega 3:1 gear box, and this weekend the front cap on the motor released, causing some issues I need help with. There was a protective fiberous covering over the stator which partially shreded and went everywhere in the motor windings, and now only part of the stator is covered. First, is the covering required? If it is, how do I replace it? Second, is the fibers in the winding matter? I would guess not, but I am a motor noob. Also, how do I glue the motor back together? Thanks, Matt Last edited by mattyhawk; Nov 01, 2009 at 09:57 PM. Reason: Pictures added |

The wrapping around the rotor is Kevlar. You can use Kevlar or Carbon Fiber to wrap the rotor again. I think it's needed as this could happen:

Hi!
Buy some Kevlar roving and good laminating resin. Place the Kevlar in the oven at 100°C for an hour to remove the internal moisture. Fix one end of the roving at the and of the rotor with CA glue, and wrap tightly around the rest of the rotor, covering all the surface. Attach the other end of the roving with CA glue, too. Now mix the epoxy resin and apply thickly. Gently heat with a hot air gun, to make it penetrate the fibres better. Then put a length of shrink wrap around the rotor, and shrink, so that excess resin is forced out, and the fibres are compressed. Now put the rotor in the oven at 60°C for a couple of hours to harden the resin. Remove the shrink wrap after everything has cooled down, and you should be as good as before. The only thing I have no Idea about is how the balancing is done, and if it is neccessary. |

you can set up 2 strait blade razors on a board and place the motor shaft on it.. using a dremel or drill remove matirial on the heavy side till it dose not try to rotate when place on the 2 blades
