Swine Flu

I know that this is no joking matter, but I couldn't resist. I couldn't believe it when I came across it...spooky. Anyway, I found this in the Octber 78 addition of Model Airplane News. I have the build article as well, but the scan turned out a little to big. I'll shrink it and post it later.

On a different subject, when did Model Builder stop printing? The reason I ask is because I have all the issues from 1971 through 86. Is this all they produced?

Mmmm..certainly is odd.

(I suggest that the name is a play on words from the german...for "2" and "Flug")

According to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Swine_influenza there was an outbreak of swine flu in the US in 1976 so the model could have been named from that.

Strange Names

It is odd that the printed catalogs of MAN plans give the name as Swine Flew.

But another terrible name is in the RCM catalog: "Spirit of Chernobyl". What an awful choice for a model to be called. What next- "HIV Positive"!

Could it be that the name "Spirit of Chernobyl" was chosen as a recognition of the suffering & subsequent courage displayed by the people of that disaster ?

Model Builder... I bought very few copies of MB once they lost sight of who their readership was. I built many of the models published in the early magazines, but eventually it just became like all the rest of them: advertising catalogues. This is why FM continues (but for how long?), because the content is aimed at someone other than the buy & fly group, and why I now read Brit magazines almost exclusively. FM just isn't consistent enough to subscribe to, and the random issues available to me don't always measure up. I'm sure that RCM died because they only offered one plan per month, but a half-dozen "buy this, it's great" advertisements. Some of the Brit magazines are heading the same way, sad to say.

Pick up an old copy of MAN or Air Trails or FM, and you will see what I mean.

TLyttle, the British mags have all gone downhill. They seem full of reviews on how to build(?) the latest ARTF - I say latest but last month one had a review for the Multiplex Blizzard - a model that must have been in the shops for about 2 years now.

I bought RCM&E every month without fail from the '60s & one or two other titles for shorter periods but stopped buying any of them regularly about 2 years ago. I now have a browse of them at one of the big chain bookshops & only purchase if there's anything that takes my interest.
So far this year I've bought 3 mags in total.

The plans have died because nobody builds model airplanes anymore, except people like us! At 51, I conside myself to have come in and the end of the great modeling peroid. Now, there's so many other things for kids to do, plus, if you want to fly, you can by an ARF or fly on the computer!! There's just not much left for the mags to print, except reviews of ARFs or lots of advertisements.
Yes my friends, it's too bad that all these great mags are going by the wayside.
That's why we all own scanners!!

Swine Flu is an odd name for a RC model, but it certainly looks unique. Just might have to add that one to the build que. Post up the article, if you get the chance.
