New Phoenix firmware versions do not allow to revert

I am currently using Phoenix firmware version 2.11 which allows me to revert to any other previous version I would like (although I did not try all of course, but I am assuming it for having tested with 2 older versions at random).

Before actually starting the upgrade to newer firmware versions 2.16 or 2.18, the Castle Link 3.19 software program produces to following alert:

" If you choose to install this upgrade, you will not be able to go back to the version of software that is currentlyon your controlleror other previousversions of software. Are you SURE you want to make this software upgrade ? "

Why is that so ? I am afraid of going forward if I will not be able to revert to older / previous version.

This possibility of going forward and backwards in firmware versions seemed to me one of the niceties about these controllers.

What should I do ? Go forward and lose this nice feature ? Or stay where I am ? In fact I would be upgrading firmware for the sole reasion of seeking better and improved overall controller performance.

Comments ?

Thanks,

Carlos

For now I would stay with 1.55 or 1.56 untill they get this out runner sync problem sorted out. And yes I agree, you should be able to go back to the release software from any newer version.

Many Castle ESC users are reporting a squealing issue on high inductance outrunners. It is thought that it is caused by the motor going out of sync at different throttle settings.

Here, here!!!!!!!!!!!!

I've haven't updated my firmware on most of my ESC to one of those non-recoverable versions because I once had an update go bad on me were the new firmware didn't run the motor I was using at the time. Had I not been able to revert, I would have been DOA.

I work in the software industry and I know that updates can break things. To not have a revert, is to say you think you're programming is perfect... fat chance on that... even NASA doesn't believe that about their programmers that much and they have one of the most rigorous processes in the world.

An update function without a revert is like a 4x4 truck without reverse... you never know when you're going to get stuck so you play it safe.

It seems that Castle can get the Phoenix back to the original firmware if you send it back to them so I don't understand why the Castle Link software can't be made to do the same. If you upgrade to 2.xx firmware with the Phoenix you can't go back to 1.55 or 1.56. I bought a Phoenix HV 110 in September 09 and it still had 1.56 firmware so Castle isn't even shipping with the newer firmware.

Has anyone contacted CC about this? They don't seem to be monitoring this thread.

Has anyone tried to install an older version of the Castle Link Software and then loading the older firmware? I would think that would just load over the new firmware. It might be worth a try.
