Longest range RC Radio (for rocket application)

I will be working on a 2-stage high powered rocket and plan to setup a radio system for manual control/payload jettison/fin retract application.
I need to be able to transmit up to 15,000 ft and was wondering if there were any RC radio systems capable of that range?
I already own a Spektrum DX6 for my parkflyers but I cannot find any documentation about the radio's expected line of sight range (I never fly my planes more than 1/2 mile or so away).

If an RC radio provided by Futaba/Spektrum will not suit me for this application, do you know of any models that will? I am looking to stay on the 2.4Ghz spectrum since I will be using a telemetry and camera system at 900Mhz, and I would like to use the dual-frequency capability radios liek the DX models have for redundancy.

Thanks in advance!

I would recommend calling Horizon Hobby. I think the techs. could answer your questions. They have always been a great help when I have called them.

a 15000 ft. range is likely not going to be hobby grade equipment.

I know Airtronics says that the SD-10G has been tested to 1-1/2 + miles, with the RX in a carbon fuse glider. Airtronics is very glider-dedicated, so they design their systems for extreme range -- I would call and ask Craig at Global/Airtronics about it -- they are great people and are willing to help. 15,000 ft. seems a little much for an R/C system, though! But, I think you would have the best luck with the Airtronics SD-10G.

I sent you a PM with Craig's number.

A friend of mine who is a pilot and photographer has setup a remote camera system to be used for taking video while the plane is in flight. He is using a Spektrum Dx6i from the ground to control a camera platform in the plane. He is using this at about a 2 mile range (10-12k feet) with no issues.

Since you will have no obstructions between your TX and RX you have the best chance of obtaining a 15k/3 mile range. You could always test this setup by placing a RX and servo at your house by placing a paperclip on top of the servo so when it turns, it falls off (or something like that). Drive 3 miles aways and give it a shot.

You may be legitimate but anyone who wants to build a rocket to drop a payload in these times sends up a red flag to me. You have no rating or location.

Our Radio Control club booth was right next to the local high power rocket group at the Miramar airshow and I'm pretty sure they told me that for anything requiring a High Power certification to shoot, R/C of any kind was strictly prohibited??????

RC in ANY rocket is a big No-No. I wouldn't be a bit surprized if feds were already monitoring this thread.
