DX6i Trainer Jack Service Bulletin

October 20, 2009
If you own a DX6i transmitter that has Product Identification Codes (PIDs) HA906X and HA907X, then please read the following advisory.
Product Identification (PID) code may be found on the inside of the battery compartment of the DX6i transmitter.

PID within the battery compartment

PID on the DX6i box (beneath the UPC)

Our service centers in the US, UK, and Germany have received several reports of short circuits occurring in the DX6i, melting some interior components. The cause for this issue is an incorrect trainer jack used in the assembly. Use of these incorrect trainer jacks by either a buddy cable or a flight simulator cable can create a short circuit, causing energy from batteries to be released in the form of heat inside the transmitter, melting interior components and generating smoke. Our investigation shows that only a small percentage of the transmitters are affected, and the situation has now been corrected at the factory, but all transmitters with these two PIDs should be returned to Horizon for inspection and, if needed, repair. Even if you do not currently use or plan to use your trainer jack, please return the transmitter for inspection.
Please complete the on-line request form here. For US and Canadian consumers, Horizon will pay for all ground shipping charges to and from our US service center. Customers outside the US and Canada should contact their retailer or local Spektrum distributor. Within Europe, please follow these links to our service centers in England or Germany. Australian consumers can follow this link. Any transmitters with PID other than HA906X or HA907X are not affected by this bulletin and do not need their trainer jacks inspected.
If you have any questions, please call our Product Support group at 1-877-504-0233.
We apologize for this inconvenience. While there is no evidence of any fire hazard associated with the melting, Horizon assumes no risk for any consumer failing to act upon this service advisory.

Well on one hand it is nice to finally know why my DX6i wouldn't work with my sim no matter what I did, on the other hand it sucks to have to send it in

I think that you should still send it in. With a faulty port on a piece of electronics, every bump or jar could possible cause the short. Plus you wouldn't want to sell it later and not disclose it was part of a recall. I have heard they have a pretty good turn around rate too.

Sure Horizon will pay for shipping & return for US & Canadian residents but with every one sending in there radio the turn around will be lengthen. I check mine and it’s not part of the recall.

The recall is concerning the use of WRONG TRAINER PORTS. IF you don’t use it then bumping the radio will have no effect.

But at the same time they also include this.

But that’s for protection issues for them.

But I guess when it comes down to this, better safe then sorry RIGHT?

I would send it in anyways too. You never know when you might want to buddy box with someone.

I just got a dx6i back from horizon 2 weeks ago and the trainer jack wouldnt work. I sent it back and they replaced it with a dx7. I suspect it had something to do with this trainer jack issue.

You sent it a DX6i and you got a DX7 back. WOW sending in mine as I type.

Oh ya I forgot I can't
#1 reason I can't is its not part of the recall and
#2 reason is that I voided the warranty when I installed my backlight kit.

Hi

My DX6i not belong to the listed PID affected but when connected the Simulator cable to Trainer port there is a burning smell. Anyone know how to check/fix this problem as I can not send my Tx to Horizon for checking (Im staying far far away from US and Canada)

Mine is not in the listed PID but close to it. When I use a sim there are connection issues and have to wiggle the cable. I'm in the UK should I send it in?

Sent mine in and got it back 8 days later. Port works perfectly now! It is really cool to finally be flying simulator with the same box I use to fly the real thing, especially because for the longest time I thought I was doing something wrong. Thanks Horizon/Spektrum!

You should send it in, I was told that there is a wire on the trainer jack that can short out and fry the radio, I sent mine in on a Thurs and got it back on Sat. the following week along with a letter stating that they were very sorry for the recall of the radio and for my inconvenience then sent me a NIB Receiver AR6100E, I am telling you the customer service for my two DX6i's cannot be beat, the people at Horizon knows how to keep customers happy. I will be well worth I promise, 2 radio's sent in 2 receivers FREE just for me not having my radio's for about 8 days and 5 of those days the wind and snow were blowing so I really didnt miss them. call product support and they will email you a call tag and you take it to UPS and your done. DO IT they warned you so if your out flying your favorite airplane $$$$$$$$ and you crash dont blame them. now im not sure if i am special and got the receivers or what the deal was but even without them the service was quick and worth not crashing a plane for me not listening.

I wasn't sure if we were supposed to mention the free receiver, but I too received one! It will be going in my HoneyBee King II when I get around to rebuilding it after I get more comfortable with my MSR.

why we received it, and that is what I CALL GREAT CUSTOMER SERVICE. The turn around time is nothing like i said it is better then losing a high dollar plane or Heli. Think about it you just took off and everything is going great and you get on final and all of a sudden your hands start getting warm so you look down and your transmitter is smoking and then you look back and say dang where's my plane, sure would be embarrassing especially on such a nice final approach.
