After a few more flights of the Sabre it was time to add a few details, in particular some small amount of riveting on the wing.

Thanks MYC, I did all the rivets in one evening sitting comfortably on the couch while my wife was watching desperate housewifes
... I have a pretty steady hand, and it did not take me more than 2 hrs with a standard pilot pen. dot dot dot ... It's not perfect if you look at it up close, but it's good enough for me ... Rivets help the appearance a bit, make it look more realistic.

Hi there,
No I did not cut down the flyfly struts. (1) As I discuss above, the steel pins that came with the struts are made of some very soft steel and bent on the first flights causing some problems. I replaced the steel pins with much harder material and the problem went away. (2) Also the flyfly wheels (ie the cheap plastic hubs) are junk, so I replaced them with some Kyosho wheels that I had around. Problem solved there too. One time (first or second flight) I took off & later landed with one mains wheel coming off. (3) the flyfly suspension struts look cute but the nose one came apart on like the third flight. I fixed that with some new nut & screw. Generally these flyfly struts are quite weak and flimsy, esp. at my weight (6lbs). But I have other slight problems too, the tam retracts are poorly made compared to say Springairs and besides leaks have developed a lot of slop which stresses the struts further (but I got this second set shipped for free so I used it ).A nice set of lightweight plastic struts would be these from tower, I have them but did not feel like using it on the Sabre (kiss principle ):http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...P?I=LXAFZ9&P=8 |

Hi Herb, I assume you purchased the lighter weight EPS foam F-86 for this project as opposed to the "EPS option" a lot of people prefer for bare foam? I'm setting up for my "once every other year glassed foamie"... I'm looking at the Fly Fly F-100 for my idle DS-513ph and Hacker B50 14XL.
Fantastic work on your F-86. |

Hi Eddie,
Yes I got the EPS version (beer cooler white styrofoam) which is easy to sand, fill, prime & laminate. It is a good quality high density white foam. I suppose the EPO version (expanded oleofin foam) is more flexible and ding resistant. The latter is similar to multiplex's elapor or the habu's material. But definitely not well suited for fiberglass work, or any surface prep for that matter. |
