I'm with you on cuting 3" up and release the inner wall.. but on this plane if you glue the ducts together you will never get them out or the fan..
So I'm going to cut some light ply pie pieces to hold the inner wall out.. glue them in place... then use a little silicon on the inside of the duct to make it smooth... then once the fan and ducts are in place I'll tape it up airtight with beldrem tape.. or maybe even silicon. that way I can cut it if the fan needs to come out it should be pretty easy |

yeah those ducts were ruled for electric 120mm from turbine, so there never were gasser ducts, so spinner fairing. And ron those figures are right in line to me! but keep in mind its less a case of fan and more a case of the small tail pipe in that A-4. Best I see is usualy 11.5 pounds, and thats with either the DS on 5kw orthe TJ on 3.8. And like Brett said any of that is only s good as your velocity to maintain it. If ya had 40 pounds but only 100mph velocity then its all gone at 100mph, the more you have the more you get to keep in flight. And! how broad your velocity band is, says how much you get to keep in middle performance flight.

Ron, very interested in your progress and comparison. Also looking fwd to seeing how you like the Dynemax in there as I have the same one. Thanks for sharing your progress. Btw, what is beldrem tape? Does it differ from clear duct tape?

Is this better than clear duct tape for exhaust ducts, etc? |

Today would have gone fast if I didn't lose my mind on a quest to lose weight
went to a single servo for brakes and retracts, also went to one air tank. I have 7ch rx so I programmed the brakes for full down elevator... when the wheel are up the program is off. This opened up a channel so I could lose the match box and put the nose wheel straight to the RX.. this also got rid of some y-harnesses.. also took off all the extension locks and used fishing line. Removed one RX pack and regulator... end up removing 7.5 oz. This should put me back to my starting weight with the DS Looks like I'll stay at 17.5 pounds... so the fan is in.. also put in the ESC gave it a fast run up and it works.. tomorrow I'll tidy up a few things, get my CG and run my test again to see the Watts, Amps and Static Thrust.. if all is well it flys Sunday Last edited by Ron101; Oct 17, 2009 at 12:18 AM. |

There are several types of clear or white duct tape. Some tapes are stronger than others, some tapes will actually remove the paint or covering when stripped off your plane. I know first hand about this.
The word "duct tape" is a general term, also called 100mph tape in the general aviation industry. A story: An old guy at Corona airport started his Cessna 172, went to full throttle while in his tie down, the plane was not tied down, and it laterally flew 200 feet into my buddies hanger and crashed through his hangar door into his Ballanka Viking . The Ballanka has wooden wings. (yes I spelled it wrong) and both leading edges wire dented badly. The next day Terry checked the prop to make sure the crank was not bent, put 100mph tape all over the leading edge of the main wings, and flew the plane to Riverside for more permanent repairs. That is why it is called 100mph tape. All tape is not the same, regardless of the color. Posting courtesy of Amarone della Valpolicilla, Classico wine from Italy. Normally 60 to 80 bucks a bottle in restaurants, 18 bucks and change at Costo. The best that Italy has to offer...who really cares about duct tape? Smooh red wine, no hangover, no head aches..from a special region in Tuscany. Try it... Last edited by SCALEFAN; Oct 17, 2009 at 12:02 AM. |

Nice Ron, but you want brakes on full down elevator
If you are ripping down the runway and wish to apply brake it may lift off!

matter of fact duct tape was the fix they sent for cobras flying in dessert storm to fix blade delamintion from the sand blasting.

When the plane leaves the ground, and you can't land back straight on the same runway, gear up. So, the gear goes up quick. Build up speed, flaps up before you turn or climb.
Landing, full flaps down if needed, get the plane on the runway, flaps up quickly, then apply brakes. If you apply brakes with the flaps down you are burning up tires and doing very little to slow down. Windy situation, headwind or crosswind, best to land with no flaps, Why I can't tell you, I just know how to do it. Brakes? only when sure you are down and sufficient speed has bled off. You are going to put some wear on the tires in a windy situation and you are going to land longer due to keeping the power on, in reserve.. Wind shear is a serious enemy of RC airplanes. It's all so routine, but the emotion and excitement often gets us screwed up. No time for checklists. |
