That'll certainly be an improvement on what I'm sure is an already great performing sailplane!

David, I did a very similar carbon/steel switch on my 1/3 ASW-24. I know it is almost a pound lighter and I am sure it will help in marginal conditions but frankly it made no difference in the way the plane flies, which was superb before and still is.

My ASW 28 is a HF model and it is brutally strong and heavy. I had it at Eagle butte a few weekends ago and in 30mph winds it was slow and lumbering. It kept up in the air fine at 20mph in the morning but it was not happy. At the end of the day the winds had picked up to over 40 and the ASW came alive. It moved out and had real momentum. I figure I'll use the steel rod and some extra balast when at the slope and the CF rod for aerotow/thermal flying.

Pulled the trigger this A.M. Our Pilatus will be here in about three weeks!
BTW. I'm a far better pilot than builder so Matt A.K.A. MadCap231ex will be taking on the construction chores. He's a very maticulous individual! The lead time gives us a chance to decide on a powerplant. Personally, I feel that a DA100, or a 3W106/110 is as large(heavy)as I want to go on this project. We are looking at several low time "pre-owned" engines that are on the market right now... Stay tuned!Randy |

I have quite a bit of time on both ends of the tow line. Matt is new to aerotowing so, we decided that we would set up my little HobbyZone Super Cub to tow my little WindRider EPP Fox. If we can keep these little guys lined up on tow, everything else should be gravy!

Will do! I have a little ST Labs 5n1 cam that takes pretty good footage!
PS: Turn your sound down! I'm a Pilot, not a movie editor! Randy

Had a great time in Wenatchee over the weekend. We pulled both of my ASW 28's. The Senior Telemaster had a hard time but did pull my 1/4 scale up twice.

Tow Line
Can anyone enlighten me as to how to properly build a tow line?
I had a link but lost it! I would like to get an idea of what most guys are using rather than re-invent wheel (so to speak). Thanks! Matt Ps Great pics everyone... |

The Senior Telemaster is owned by Craig Wentz who lives in Wenatchee. It has a Thunder Tiger 90 in the nose. We have done a lot of tows with it and smaller ships but this is the first time with a 12+ lb ship. The only real problem was when at altitude, the string got slack a few times and instead of yanking in the glider it yanked really hard on the tug.
