Aero-tow East

This is a thread for everyday activity in the Eastern part of the US. You can post any day to day activity you like or share pictures and stories from the weekend of flying.

No specific topic, just whats going on and what you did in aero-towing.

To Start this off, I was invited by Steve Richman to travel down to the Wrams field in Patterson NY to fly with the guys there. Since I'm a sailplane junkie, I jumped at the opportunity to fly at this first class facility. A beautiful day dawned and the trailer was loaded, off I went. About an hour and a half later I was backing and and setting up the gliders. Steve and I were determined to work out some kinks in his gorgeous L213-A which was acting a little bitchy the last time we flew it.
Thanks to Dan, one of the local expert pilots who we commendered to fly the tow plane all day while we tweeked the 213, we were able to tame the beast.. This plane flies real well.
I took mine along too and got in a flight which was not the best but it was back safe.
Steve flew his giant Mini-moa and I got in a flight on my Windex, and of coarse I managed to drop the nose dolly into the tall grass and lost it. Two words for the next one , FLORESCENT ORANGE.

Here are a few photos from the Sunday. Notice what Steve and his instructor are reading.

In all fairness, it was a Multiplex radio they were trying to program, not a JR 12x which my cat can program.

Multiplex radios, especially the mc30xx/4000 series are very easy to program, only exception IMHO is the the multi-mix function on the 4000.

But everything else is really very logical and straightforward.

At one woodcrafters event a few years back, I remember a poor soul trying to program elevator compensation for spoiler deployment into his Futaba TX ( don't remember what model TX excatly) . He spent hours at it, and finally gave up...

On the mc4k that's a matter of minutes...

I know it doesn't really need to be said, but I'm just teasing Steve, he has been an invaluable asset to me with sailplane advice.

Michael, I sent someone your way recently to check out the Vario, I hope he contacted you.

Yeah Len, let us in on what's happening your way. Probably having too much fun flying to get the build finished?

Still haven't started the re-building of my -13 yet.

Since the subject is East Coast flying, anyone going to Asher's aerotow on the 24th/25th? I'll be there.

Well Guys, With all the flying and traveling this summer, I have not worked on the 13 at all, I plan to continue this winter, although, to be honest, the plan is now considered small for my taste. I would love to have a 6 meter version. I'm sure I will finish it, thats just the way I am.
I have an 8 meter Duo Discus on order which will not be here till spring at the earliest, so I will need something to work on.

I would also love to go to Asher's aero-tow, maybe next year.

Anyone else out there flying?????

Len,

You have me hooked now. I have the DG-600 in great shape and I was going to fly it last Sunday over in New Canaan. I have my Super Cub all set now with a new speed control and it should be able to pull the DG-600 up with no problem.

Have to laugh though, I had both of them loaded and brought them to fly and I realized while driving to the field that both my Super Cub and the DG-600 are on the same radio.....makes it kind of hard to fly them at the same time!

I have a new transmitter about set up here so I can get Steve Pasierb or Roger Kleinert to tow me (I figure we can swap towing eachother).

Starting to think about the next scale sailplane already here......Steve and I have been talking about a 5m Sligsby Petrel build, but don't know if he still wants to do that.

I have been looking at the possibility of either a Duo Discus or a DG-1000 in 1:3.75 scale to match the scale of my DG-600. Looks like there are some nice ones out there. I think LET models has a DG-1000 in this scale and the quality of the plane looks incredible.

I will definately build this one a bit slower than the DG-600 !

Bob

I have a few options for my next project but I'm really thinking wood. I like vintage. Just scored a Hall Cherokee short kit but it's around 1/4 scale. I'm really thinking about following Len's lead: My 1/3 -13 is awesome (the airplane, not my build ) but IMHO Len's is the ultimate. Without seeing his I know the kit quality has to be top notch. I had my hands on some of Tony E's craftsmanship today.

Bob, Its nice to have planes in your arsenal that have different speed ranges. I find that the slow ships are nice, but I want to scream buy the flight line at 15 feet doing mack 6 then pull up into a loop, That gets the blood flowing. I don't know if you were there when we came in from up high and behind a bunch of guys sitting in their chairs relaxing, It was quite comical to see them jump when the Ventus came whistling past.

Sean, As we talked about , Tony does a wonderful job, first class stuff.

Dennis, Don't tease us, you know you are welcome here, its an open invitation, come on out. I will be visiting you guys next year for sure. Gotta fly Torry ,
How about starting an Aero tow West thread?

Len, I think an Aerotow west thread has already been started. Seeing the L-213 is good, but it is just a little bit like selling off one of your children, I wish I could keep them all but only have so much room and still have eyes for new and different beasts for aerotowing, the half scale 28 is still lurking out there, but at the current exchange rate I just have to wait!

Looks like its scale sloping on Saturday and Towing all day Sunday
We have a bunch going up to the Hill on Saturday with winds forecast at 15 mph to 30mph
Sunday 6 mph with lots of lift

Scale is alive here in Delaware
