Sea Dart project

I am starting on plans to make a fully-functional Convair Sea Dart as a winter project. I will be making more announcements on designs shortly.

here are the plans

material- sheet foam
power-edf's, up to twin 70mm's.
size- to scale for ducting
water takeoff/ landing capable- yes.
version- single ski for ease of constructuon

here are the plans it will be based off.

for those who don't know what a sea dart is... this is the twin ski version
Convair F2Y Sea Dart (1 min 54 sec)

great! always lie support

anyways, I have made a list of parts (as of now

Foam: 6mm depron for framing of body, thin depron (maybe 1mm-2mm max) for skin. this should keep the plane light for flight.

edf: twin 66mm-70mm edf's. going by cost, because everyone likes a low cosst aircraft.

motor: hobby king 4900kv motor

esc: 50a esc

battery: 4s definite, size to be determined by weight.

Servos: 2 to 4 servos, narrow wing servos, 9mm thickness (external mount option
2 3kg+ servos (internal mount option, most likely
2 6kg standard servos for retractable ski
1 servo for rudder/ water rudder

size:scale. the size of the aircraft wll be determined by the ratio of the edf duct to the plan's ducting size.

radio: 6ch 2.4ghz radio from hobbyking

Retract system:

i hope to have 2 servos for the retractable ski, with homeade waterproofing. The plan is to use 2 pushrods mounted to hinges to push the rods out. the foreward servo will push less, to make the scale look. 4 tubes will slide in and out to hold the retracted panel in line. pics to come.

Well, i looked at the airplane's specs on wikipedia, and found that the original plane had between a .96 and .54 t/w. meaning, weigtwise, there should be no thrust problem.

you'll be surprised. there are a lot of methods i'm tinking of for this ski, and i have a lot of places near water. guaranteed, it will fly on and land on water, just as the original did: getting up to ski speed (5kts), deploying skis and taking off, and landing the same. plus, the delta needs a high angle of attack for takeoff and landing, so having water around will help.

figured out some dimensions. tip-to-tip, the wingspan will be 39", and length will be measured soon- i got 60, but with a 60 degree delta wing, doesn't seem right.

The fan will be a cheap 66mm 6-blade from hobby-lobby. The motor will be a 4900kv off-brand on a 4s with a 50a esc. 2 motor setups for the plane. judging by the power made by the thin-impellered storm with a 4150kv motor, the motor setup shouod produce around 2lbs+ thrust others using a similar setup.

Quick question- i am looking at the feedback on the motors, and i'm hearing a lot of the same tune: The engine is FAST!!! but the speed controller needs to be set up with a good heat sink and ventillation. Anyone have a suggestion on how to get these more venting without putting them in the ducting or on top of the plane?

Borrowed some better plans (and a template for the paint job) from Pontious and W@cco's sea dart thread. Will be comparing these together, and more likely, i'll be using the plans from the old thread (clearer)

Does anyone have a drawing of the rear end? i need the size and placement of the rear ducts for the plans (and correct scaling).

works well enough. scale stays. I had set the plane up for 75mm for space for the edf's, and it works well for what i see. Any ideas on a water rudder?
