Two F-22's

When I picked up my F-22 kit at NEAT, I got a second one for a flying buddy.
We got together last week for a quick flying session, so I thought I'd post up a pic of both our F-22's.

In a recent conversation, Brian told me that he is almost ready to release the F-22. He's waiting on some CF for the spar.

I got one at NEAT ! I just finished it Friday night. Saturday it flew. WoW!. 3.5 oz. with a 3S 300 pack and an eflite park 180. I only have a 4.5 inch prop though. going to change to a 5 or 5.5 X 4 and try that. Currently just over 1:1 power to weight ratio. At this weight it just makes me laugh out loud ! I flew in a 10 mph wind. The guys at my club field were all laughing and pointing and ooohing ! because I was hovering nose in and then flew backwards !....Even in almost dead air landing was more of a plop than a slide. Flare up and stall from 12" plop. I thought a loop in 4' or less was good but I guess someone has it going even tighter.
I'd love to see someone's video of this. I haven't the time during the week to do one.

I see that your buddies plane has a different size elevon than yours. Is his a little more responsive or does the higher area on his not really affect flight?

Jim, after NEAT, Brian was a little concerned about the elevon area, and the fact that the cutouts meant there was less surface area directly in the propwash. So my buddy added some area by glueing some thin foam over the existing elevons.

Curiously, he doesn't see any difference between his and mine, and is thinking about cutting the additional foam off. I do believe that Brian increased the size of the elevons in directly behind the prop a bit from the kit I got.

I talked to Brian last night, and he is very close to releasing the F-22. As soon as he does, I'll change the title of this thread and note that it's been released, for those who have an interest.

I took mine out this morning and flew it for almost nine minutes. It is just a bunch of fun to fly. I've even dorked it in on landing a couple of times, and haven't severely damaged it, although I did knock the foam piece that the motor mount attaches to out this morning. A little glue and I will be good to go again.

Well, the instructions are done and kits are cut and bagged up, ready to go. I even got shipping boxes for them yesterday.

I have to finish up the "photo" model for the web site. It's painted, and I'm waiting for the paint to finish drying. I'll get photos later today and start getting everything added to the web site for it; motors, ESC's, servos, batteries, and finally, the kit.

So, depending on the "honey-do" list for today, and the sailplane club meeting tonight, it'll be available for sale tonight or tomorrow morning.

I got out yesterday for a couple of flights with my F-22. My flying buddy met up with me with his as well.

I had been having an issue with left turns -- right turns were fine, but turning left was sometimes an issue. I finally thought to check the lateral balance of the model, and I found that the plane was seriously weighted on the right side (ESC on the right side, and the battery sort of center/right). So I moved the battery to the left side a bit, and that's how I flew it yesterday. Flew much better with the lateral balance correct. I don't have a lot of experience with pusher jet type models, so the lateral balance issue never really occurred to me. So, if you're flying one of these, I'd suggest that you check the lateral balance as well as the CG when you fly it. It will fly much better if it's not off balance!

Here's a video of the F-22 flying indoors. Keep in mind that this was the first time I've flown indoors in about 10 years, so the flying isn't all that great. But, it gives you a point of reference as to how it can fly.

Glad to see you are still flying at the City Auditorium. I miss that.

I've flown my F-22 in my yard which is something as I believe it is smaller than the auditorium. Lots of fun!

Hey Doug, when are you going to stop by again?

What about a ducted fan version of the f-22? I have a 40mm GWS fan that needs a home...

This little beast came home from NEAT with me. What a blast. I beat it up a little today trying to put it into the back of my S-10 pick-up. I had better luck later in the afternoon when I landed perfectly on top of the hard tonneau cover. http://www.maineaerialphotography.net/F-22.MOV

This is a great outdoor flyer in winds < 5 mph. Over that things get dicey. I have flown in over 10 mph but it takes most of the fun away.

My video was obviously this model doing some high alpha, which isn't easy without rudders. I cut the rudders loose tonight at about the 50% back point . I beveled them and taped them on. I used 2 tiny pieces of ply for control horns and one little cf rod with metal ends to tie them together. A metal pushrod goes forward from the left vertical stab to a servo mounted inside with just the control horn coming through the top deck. That servo is just about on the cg mark. I might move the battery forward a 1/4 or 3/8 as I was faintly tail heavy before.
I think , just looking at this setup, that I may have to add aileron to rudder mix to counter what may be an adverse yaw due to the rudder being so close to the prop. The left rudder moving into the prop-wash on a right turn looks like it would give a left aileron type action and visa-versa.

Let me know how the rudders work out for you. As you noticed, when you get into very high alpha flight, you basically watch it slowly turn to the left. You can get it to turn right with blips of throttle and right aileron, but it takes some work.

P.S. I absolutely LOVE your parking job in the bed of your truck!

Darn Maine Weather! It's 8:04am and the rain has begun. If it comes close to stopping for a minute I'll get out and try this with the rudders.
