EPP Edge 540 T; videos, plans

Edge 540 T

This Edge 540 T is a spin off from the EPPYak55 . Similar size and construction and flying qualities, but with a new distinctive look. I really like the lines of the Edge 540 T. My personal challenge was to see if I could make a similar plane that looks like an Edge 540 T but that will fly as well as the Yak55 and maybe better! It shares a lot of the dimensions of the Yak (wing span, tail span, wing to tail spacing, etc) yet I tried to retain the lines and look of the Edge.

Here is the maiden video:

Build guide and build photos

Under construction

The design of this plane started with the Zivko factory 3 view drawings of the Edge 540 T. Then several adjustments were made to allow good low speed flight characteristics and to make it work as a profile foamie.

You didn't say where you got the epp... I have been pricing tonight and looks like RCskyflyer.com has the best prices... You do alot of epp so just curious... RcFoam has alot of choices, but look abit higher... Don't know if they have a difference in their processing. Seems like I have read that hot wire epp is better due to its "skin"...

thanks and btw, looks like another good one

RCSKyflyer has always treated me right. I believe they are in So Cal somewhere, and RCFoam is in atlanta. I've heard good things about RCFoam but have never used them. IMO, choose whoever offers better prices.

I will say that RCSkyflyer has some cool deals and good discounts on carbon/foam orders.

Hey Dan,

Is the tail moment on the your Edge shorter than the one on your Yak? I watched the video, and it does some good loops. Will it Lomcevak? I'd love to see someone do that one indoor.
How to Lomcevak II (2 min 27 sec)

I bought the epp from RCFoam. I think I bought from them this time because they had the carbon I wanted also.

The tail moment is actually sightly longer. See the pic below.

The Lomcevak looks just like what I do just before a maneuver I call a Smakitin.

But seriously, I think the EPP Yak or Edge may be too light to do a Lomcevak...but ya never know?

With the tail moment being longer it should, if my calculations are correct have slightly better hover characteristics than the Yak??

Lead - I noticed the elecs are mounted way forward. Is this because of the added weight of the carbon? In the parts count you didn't mention battery size. I assume 2S for indoor and 3S for outdoor?

I overshot on my initial guess on cg and moved the equipment too far forward. I'll be adjusting parts positions this evening.

2s works for me for indoors and outdoors. If you use larger batteries than you may need 3s for the extra weight of the battery.
