One of the local guys has a white Slow Hawk. It's not t-shirt white though, it is translucent. It's an interesting look for sure. I think you'll like it ![]() Snrek, looks good! I'm looking forward to your maiden report

Hi All, I was going to wait until I flew mine to do any more posting but it seems like things have calmed down around here so I thought I would post a pick and a few comments. I received my servos today and finished putting my Hawk together. Pretty easy to assemble and I gotta say this thing is big! I have an E-Fite Ascent and even though the Glide Hawk’s W.S. is the same it seems much bigger. Could be the wing cord at the fuse being about 10” deeper or the flapping of the wings by my head but either way I am a little nervous about letting this thing loose at the park! After work the soccer kids start showing up around 4:00pm and I would be leery of trying my bird out then so I am hoping for an early morning test flight this Saturday. The kids start showing up around 8:00am but this gives me a little time before they start. I probably won’t get the performance from my battery I would have in warmer weather but I’ll take what I can get. Sorry for the dark picture.

I am in ohio but it was like 45degrees at the field last night and dummy me left the battery out on the picnic table for about an hour needless to say that lipo didnt like the cold too well. It was very promising and ill get her up tomorrow for sure.
Snrek dont worry too much its gonna fly great but like others have told be sure to take a paper clip with you for balancing. Mine seemed to have a tendency to turn to the left but i will know more tomorrow night hopefully. |

OH..,I SEE!!... I'm glad you reminded me about the paper clips. When all said-n-done i'll be taking that with me.
What batteries are yall taking to the field? I'm taking 900mah,1000mah and my 1320mah 2 cells with me. Last edited by G-LO; Oct 06, 2009 at 05:04 PM. |

Kris, did Sean tell you to run 2 cells? I got a Shrike from Nathan and it appears these newer birds all use a different brushed motor. The Gen II motors were externally brushed motors and required 3 cells to fly well. People tried 2 cells on them and they were underpowered. Not sure about these new motors though.
Snrek, you are on the right track as far as maidening with no one around. These birds are very gentle flyers once trimmed out, but you never know what's going to happen on the first flight. My SH took full right rudder just to fly straight, it was a struggle to get it down without piling it in. I initially tried swapping the diagonal rods and some other tricks, but couldn't get it balanced. I finally tried the paper clip method (the clamp-type clip) and it worked great. If the bird is pulling right, the clip goes on the left wing and vice versa. It takes a few test flights to get it in just the right place, basically I just flew it for a few minutes and if it was still pulling I landed, moved the clip and tried again. Once it was flying straight and true with no TX trim required, I took the "handles" off the clip and left the clamp in place. |

Yes sean said to use two cells. These birds have the brushless motors on them i forget the kv on them but i know seans climbs like crazy on two cells.

Ah, I see. My new Shrike has a brushed motor on it that is different than the Gen II brushed motors. I'll run it up on the Whattmeter to see if it needs 2 cells or 3.

I just bought a brushed Slowhawk 2 from Nathan. What kind of out put will you be looking for on the watt meter? Rick

My first flight was exciting and short. I couldn’t wait until this weekend and my after work options aren’t to good, at least for now, after I get comfy flying this one I’m sure I’ll be able to fly when other people are at the park. Anyway I decided to do the next best thing….Went over on my lunch break today. I ran the throttle up to a little over half and gave the hawk a nice toss. It started dropping so I gave it full throttle. I had launched it at about 45 degrees to the headwind (2/3 mph) and when I turned into the wind it really started climbing. My first turn caused a pretty good drop in altitude and my second turn (into the down wind direction) had to come right after the first turn because of how the flying area is set up, this caused another drop, then I did what I do best sometimes, that is I started over correcting and things never did get going well and the hawk just sort of dropped the last 20 feet making solid contact with earth! I broke one of the wing spars. I spoke with Sean a little while ago, mainly to see if I could replace the solid CF rod with hollow because I can’t locate the solid locally. My plan at this point is to get the hollow rod and insert a solid CF rod the entire length. I may need to do both sides to keep things equal but for now I will be repairing the one side. Even though my maiden flight was short and I managed to break a spar rod the hawk is really well built.
I am currently using an off brand 800mah 2-cell. They are not rated very high, 10C with short 15C bursts but I have several of them and they are pretty light. I put the C.G. just a little forward of the suggested mark, I may move it back before my next flight. |

What color did you get? After I got the new Shrike I placed another order with Nathan for a 2nd SH. My older one is midnight (dark blue) with yellow trim, the new one is red with black trim. It's actually for my son, he's only 6 but I have dreams of the two of us flying SH's in formation some day He's getting his feet wet with smaller ornis right now, he has an iFly Vamp and the indoor astronaut orni (forget the name).

Sorry to hear it didn't go so well! I broke a rod or two on my YH, it's been a few years but I know I broke at least one until I was able to get it trimmed and flying right. So welcome to the broken spar club I wouldn't fly it with only one side repaired and the other side stock because if there's any difference in rod stiffness between the two sides it's really going to throw off the bird's balance. Based on my many SH flights I would suggest staying off the controls on launch until you get a fair bit of altitude. Until it has a little speed going, directional inputs (especially up elevator) tend to slow it to near-stall. Launch it straight into the wind and let it climb on its own using minimal stick input to keep it into the wind. Launch it level or slightly nose up, but don't launch it high alpha. Sounds like your launch went fine, but I'm putting this here for the benefit of others who may need the info as well ![]() You mentioned it dropping altitude in the turns, sounds like the tail angle may be too steep. The first few flights on my YH went terribly because I had the tail too high, it couldn't build enough speed to fly well. Too much tail angle ("up" elevator) will not induce a nose-up attitude on these birds like it does on a plane, it just slows them waaaaay down and makes them fly sloppy. You might try adjusting the tail down slightly for the next flight. Good luck! |
