BM,

I was wondering if I should seek out a larger heatsink or just leave this one "As is". Anything much larger and you'll not be able to gain access to the mount-holes and I don't suggest hot-gluing the PCB to anything because the board itself dissipates a moderate amount of heat (since the regulator is soldered to the large groundplane).

From my personal experience with inflight demands, even a normal 40 size trainer doesn't idle at more than a couple of hundred mA and only has short peaks which are handled well by the large output decoupling caps and the fast response of the regulator.

Basically the device is ready to sell at this point, I've even added a firmware update that allows you to use it as a LMA device if you leave the 'signal' pin connected, or just as a normal BAC if you leave the signal pin in, without having to actually change jumpers or anything like that.

Paul.

Anyone in Australia willing to put one of these 3A BAC units through its paces?

I'm wanting someone who'll use it in a dual-lipo setup. Preferably in a reasonable sized plane (glider or glow).

Paul,

I have a 60 size P51 Mustang that I have converted to electric. It has 4 x 821 digital servos + a retract servo. Happy to test in that unit? Will probably use dual 750 mAHr 2S lipo rx packs with XtremeLink 2.4 Radio system.

BM,

Sounds like a fairly decent setup - PM me your address and I'll organise to send an eval unit to you.

Okay, looks like we're about to hit retail-release.

I changed the heatsink bonding system again to an adhesive paste (looks like normal white thermal compound but it cures after about 12 hours). With the adhesive paste the heatsink gets hotter but that's a good thing since it's drawing more heat away from the regulator.

Before I was getting about 75'C on the heatsink with the 1.6A load but now I get 84'C but where's before the system would shut down at 82'C on the heatisnk, it keeps on going beyond 85'C on the heatsink.

The addition of airflow makes a significant difference to the temperature. With my workshop fan set at minimum (about 1m/s) the heatsink went from 84'C to 44'C, that's a HUGE difference with a moderately low airflow.

Paul.

Thanks. It's been a bit of a longer-than-normal prototyping run to get to this point, though the delays from Christmas etc couldn't be side-stepped

Now of course, here's the fun bit... will there even be an interested market, always the fun bit.

I'm terminating this product - a recent round of price increases from suppliers has made it completely impractical for me to build this (the regulator chip alone is over $12).
