Mylar/plastic for exhaust ducting?

Where is the best source to buy rolls of mylar or similar plastic for making exhaust ducting. When we were at E-jets, it seems that everyone used mylar or some type of acetate sheet. In Arizona, mylar warps because our temps here sitting on the tarmac can exceed 140 degrees. Stu (Stumax fame) mentioned some type of PTGE (sp?) plastic. Any ideas what to use and where to get it?

I use drafting mylar, never had a problem with heat warping it. Most drafting supplies offices sell it.

I have been purchasing mine locally for ten or eleven years at:
Ge Polymershapes
12707 49th Street North
Clearwater, Fl
727-573-3535
Usually use .01 polycarbonate (lexan). I have found it's fairly heat resistant as I use in with my ICDF's as well and the tube is really close to the tuned pipe. Thicker polycarbonates also work in the inlet when reinforced with carbon. Glues together very well with standard Elmer's contact cement or equivalent.

About halfway down the page. MylarŪ (PET Polyester Film). I like the 48 inch widths. The material comes rolled into a tight radius and as such with the 48" width the "roll" is in the correct direction for thrust tubes up to 48" (material will not completely flatten out).

It's a thick material (0.014") and is unaffected by Florida summer heat. The efflux tube for one of my jets laid flat measures approx. 16" by 29" and weighs 5 oz.

The material is also good for wet fiberglass layup work.

Regards,
Leonard

Jim,

Also, Aaron Bros art marts or any good art store carries .005 mylar drafting film. A 40" x 12 foot roll is is about $13 at Aaron bros.

BTW: .005 is plenty thick enough for even big jets.

I would use aluminum furnace tape (hdwr store) cut to the width you want, for assembling and mounting the thrust tube. The alum is conforming and the adhesive will hold up better to the higher temps, than a cellophane type tape.

I can't imagine anything thinner than .030 working properly. I know the thin Mylar we tried in the past just ripped right open from just 15 pounds of thrust being compressed from 5" to 3.3875".

Jim,
Where did it rip? Probably at the feedthrough for the wires, or the edge Joint. Be sure to reinforce the feedthrough area and provide for a well overlapped edge. Tape the full length of the duct, INSIDE and OUTSIDE.

The .01 is plenty thick enough to stand up to almost any abuse you can give it. I can cut it but have never torn it even in crashes. The contact cement although a little messy is a superior bonding method. Taped joints seem to open up in the heat of the sun even if they are done inside and out.

im using drafting mylar on my 3600W midi setups. using packing tape to hold the seam, and a couple bands around it ever 8" or so. i plan to use it on my 5kw turbax. i dont think there will be a issue. you can rip that stuff to save yourlife unless it has a tear or a cut already in it.

I get mine at Tap Plastics. They have a website, but I live 15 minutes from one of their stores. They have several types at the store and sell it by the foot.
