Cool
The MEGA Keyfob Camera thread.................

I can't believe how SMALL this thing is I've got it charging right now so hopefully I can do a video with it later to get an idea how fast the fps is.
But man even my 5G6 can probably carry this thing. It weighs next to nothing.
Attention, added 6-11-2010 Due to a request here is a good resource for everything you ever wanted to know about Keychain cameras.

Oh good. Hopefully mine works as well as your friends' does. I'm going to use it on some of my smaller planes that won't carry my heavier nikons. Should be fun on my 3D foamies

I got one of those too a couple days ago.

The video quality is actually very good. I'm happy with it. Especially since I only paid $20 for it.

You can find them on eBay.

They usually go for around $25, but you can hit it lucky sometimes and get them for less.

The video quality IMO is great. It's not bad on a plane neither. It just blurs out a bit if you make fast turns, but what do you expect for something that cheap.

You have to unzip the time and date files back into the camera. I found out by accident.
Then you click on the unzipped files and they creat a "time txt" folder. That file changes the time and date when it's opened.
I did a few short vids around the house this evening. Simply amazing for such a small cheap camera. It rivals my old FCO2

A friend at the field has been using one for about a week now and the videos he has gotten on his EDF planes is good. We velcro'ed it to my trex 450 heli and the picture was wavy half the flight but I know helicopters are known for vibrations and would probably be better if it was mounted to foam instead of directly to the frame. I just ordered one for $25 shipped off ebay and can't wait for mine. Here is a video he just posted:

Mine had player software and time and date software in it. Man these tiny cameras are going to be great for small planes. It makes the FCO2 look large by comparison.

player software?

I don't see that, Maybe its not on mine. I'm running Win Vista which it is new for me, Maybe I don't have it set up right to see all files?
Or it could be my lot of cam don't have it.

I think I read some where that you can make a file on your computer and replace the one in the camera for the time and date. If that is so, I wonder if you can place a blank file in the camera and get rid of the time date all together?

Yes! I did. The first one I bought didn't work but once, so I bought another and it works. The first one I took the case off and it is packed so tight and the case is so light you don't gain anything. It's best to leave it alone.

I notice black bars in picture when plane's motor is running. Is that because of brush motor noise or does it do it with brushless motors too?

Picture is quite sharp.

I've had one of these cameras. It wasn't very good, and chewed through AAA batteries like nothing. Some of the best photos are here:

That's from shooting through the prop arc. CMOS cameras all do that. A CCD camera won't show the "bars".

Well I can't say I'm very happy with the 15fps video rate mine has but I guess you get what you pay for. Otherwise the video's pretty good. I'm posting one on vimeo so I'll post the link once it's done.

Well, due to circumstances beyond my control, well ok some really bad double sided tape, my camera fell into some very tall grass today and I lost it.
In the meantime I found this one at a hard to believe price.
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.d...m=160364097026
The guy's feedback is only 25 but he's been a member since June. Hopefully I won't get stung. One thing I liked about this camera is that it takes a micro sd card like the chewing gum cameras and it's rated at 30 fps
Only sixteen bucks shipped too

I just place an order for one myself, But the seller talk about memory card, If its any thing like the one we got, There no place for a memory card?.
The only thing he don't say like the other seller, is the cam a 4GB or a 8GB?
That what I have seen so far from other seller.

I saw that one too and I'm considering getting it. It looks like there are two (or more) models - one 8Gb one and a 0Gb with a memory slot (for a micro-SD card). My only concern would be ensuring the write capability of the card, a slower card might degrade the video quality. I don't know much about how fast current micro SD cards are...

This ad shows the memory card slot up close. There must be several versions of this camera just like there are of the gum camera.

I don't think you have as much to worry about with cameras that record in AVI vs MOV. My nikons all record in mov and they seem to be more sensetive to the write speed than my other cameras that record in avi.

" Dear birdofplay,

We feel sorry that it can only set the time and date, no turn off function.

Thanks.

SO, I guess we are doomed to see the date stamp in all these Fob Camz !

At 640(720)x480 what is the max video length with an 8gb card?. The reason I ask is I am thinking about using an external (single lipo?) battery and trying to get it to run a minimum of 12hrs, ideally 24hrs continuous. Its for a 24hr car endurance race and I'm looking for a real cheap (and disposable) camera to be mounted to the front bumper. I read somewhere about a euro tax issue that means cheap cameras have a fat32 file limitation of 4gb. So even if the card is bigger it stops recording after a 4gb file is written. Something about it being classified as a camcorder vs. camera w/video.

Anyone actually tested filling a full 8gb/16gb card with one continous file?

Thanks,

Jon.

Only one time it has happen while testing, I left it on for 2 hrs and got 1GB of video, But all the other time I average about 669MB.

didnt they say 60 MB per minute or so ?

8,000,000,000 / 60,000,000 = 8000/60 = 800/6 = 133 minutes !

So my 4gb card ought be good for ~ 1 Hr ! 8 gb => 2 hrs

You'll have to buy 6 8 gb cards AND figure out a way to POWER IT for that long.

Now I dunno how long YOUR flight batteries last but that's good enough for me !

Besides how much of this are you willing to RE-LIVE ?

I just save clips of the "Good Stuff",
like Hawk encounters, take offs , fly bys and landings.

Why don't you just mount a wired camera to the bumper and run it into a dvr via a cable?

You can get them off ebay a LOT cheaper. My wife's sister got a 2gb card at wally world for her cell phone and it cost 15 dollars. I got my wife the same exact card from a vendor in pa for 6 bucks

Been there done that. In short there are too many points of failure. Spikes in battery voltage (running a Dimension Eng 3A voltage reg to drop 12v to 4.2v and avoid using the single lipo battery), vibration, heat, plus the cost. Big difference in putting a $100 bullet camera and an $70 Aiptek style DVR/camcorder vs $25 for one of the keychain cams. I also know for a fact because I've tested it that it will not record a mov/avi file larger than 4Gb due to the Fat32 limitation.

Sure, I agree that 2hrs is plenty for an RC aircraft, but my application needs the absolute maximum length video clip. So I guess the answer is, noone has managed to record a file greater than a couple of Mb before the battery runs out .

Guess I'll have to buy one, hack it with an external battery and see.

I assume 1x3.7v lipo in these?

How long the Li-po last I don't know, But the longest I had it on was 3.5 hrs, But only got 669MB, Its strange only one other time I left it on for 2 hrs and got 1GB video file.

The other night we had a T-storm, Took the cam outside and got some thunder strike, My girl friend thought I was crazy for doing that! Lol......
I'm using Ulead Video Studio, I learn how to cut the video down, But not how to save it so I can post the video on the internet, Does anyone know how to do it?

I'm not sure, but I think videos are like photos. Sometimes when taking photos, one picture will be much higher in Mp that others. The only thing I can think of is how much information does the camera have to process? So, if one video has a lot of things to video and at another place less, maybe that is why you get more or less during the same amount of time. And believe me, I'm no expert at too many things, so this may be just a lot of hooie!

That is a good question. If it will work with out the card or not, And if it does how long?
I order one two days ago, So who ever get there first, post your finding.

The auction shows that it needs the card to record.

I went for this one ...

http://cgi.ebay.com/Key-Chain-Spy-Ca...4.c0.m14.l1262

IT "CLAIMED" a bit more resolution ( 720 vs 640 )
I assumed that it's a HD format thang.
Plus it claims higher mem cap at 16GB vs 8gb.

I got mine with just a 4 gb card.

I guess we'll see when it arrives, eh :-)

I thought the extra capacity (8 vs. 16Gb) was a nice feature until I found out 16Gb micro SDHC cards (Microcenter) are $50+ (the 8Gb are only $17) Kind of makes the extra capacity moot when the cards cost ~3x the price of the camera.

"..How do you set the date and time on these things?..."

Use Notepad, made a text file with this line in it:

2009.09.25.21.39.00

that is yyyy.mm.dd.hh.mm.ss if you had not figured it out, use the 24 hour clock for times after noon.

Save that file to the root of the memory card as "time.txt". Disconnect from the PC, power up the camera, and it should read the file. The file will be gone after it reads it and a test photo will confirm it's working.

I put in a time that was a few minutes ahead and then disconnected and powered up about one second before the time in the file and it was right on the money.

If the text file reads

2009.09.25.21.39.00 N

it sets the time and does not put it on the video or photos or films (you can see it on the files still)

putting in 2009.09.25.21.39.00 Y will turn it back on again.

This was with the chewing gum pack camera from eBay, $19.95 with shipping and I had it 7 days later from China to Maine.

The seller responds to emails quickly and in polite and coherent English.

On that gum stick camera a 4 GB card (max you can use I think) will give you a fully charged battery continuous recording of just under two hours in length. It saves one file at 50 minutes and the second when the battery gets low so you two, one hour or so each, avi file recordings.

What amazes me is all the different prices for essentially the same thing.

Time will tell if the vids are as sharp as claimed.

I have LOTS of gliders to test this on :-)

Well here is one of my test.
Its not the best cam, It have seen other video from other Spy Key Chain Cam come out better.
I'm holding it the hole time, So the video jumps around. The first scene is a T-Storm, then in my pickup and in a Store. But all in all its not bad for $20. that I pick up from E-Bay.

Test spy key chain (3 min 6 sec)

It's funny sometimes when I think about it. We kinda complain about technology that wasn't even heard of not so long ago. Sometimes I sit here and curse my internet speed and then it hits me that fifteen years ago I would never have believed I'd be doing all the things I'm taking for granted today. We do live in amazing times.

Okay I was able to record 1.65gb on the keychain but the first videos wasn't flying realated. But when I did mount it inside the plane, 2 minutes into my flight it stopped recording and I assume the battery died because when I started to record for the next flight it only recorded for 30 seconds. If its plugged into the computer with the LED flashing, shouldn't it be charging?

With the cam lens pointed up the back button turns it on. Then you hold the top button untill the led flashes three times and it should be recording. The when finished you hold the top button to stop it then hold the bottom button to turn it off. Right?

About six years ago I got back into r/c modeling after being away for almost two decades, electric flight and r/c groups had me flying alpha warbirds in 4 months, without r/c groups it would have token me at least two years of trial and error and a lot more crashes before I could fly warbirds. Keep up the great work guys even the dessenters and bad experiences are welcome, my P40 is on a slow plane to Canada.

You're right about the buttons and the flashing light hugocraft. You probably just ran the battery down. The battery doesn't have a lot of reserve capacity.

Even though nothing goes by boat anymore according to the usps, it still has to clear customs and depending on how they label the package, it takes a while. The smart ones put "gift" on the label and that usually goes through much faster for some reason.

Not bad for about $20 I have the one with the 4 gig on board memory, have ordered the one with the micro sd slot. It works best with good lighting conditions.

Great vid! I can see that it may work better for me than you. Your vid is excellent. I plan to put in foamie. I hope flying solwer will eliminate the washout that appears in your turns. I will take wider turns also. How did you disable sound? I had planned to put a small piece of wind cover from one of my kids mics' over the hole,( still some sound ). I ordered the one with sd slot. Maybe Mon..

..a small dab ..(just a drop or 2)of hot glue over the mic slot, mutes the sound ...if you ever need sound ,just peel it off...

anyone have a source for this cam besides ebay?

Thanks for the kind words, I disabled sound through software. I used a bought program for the first clip , but just tried it on a nose carema clip with windows movie maker which comes free with vista home premium, I will post it when it finishs uploading to Ytube. The wheather has been terrible up here, the wind dies down only 1/2 hour before sunset or is flyable at sunrise, not the best light for this little camera , I think the washouts will not be as bad if you fly on a clear day and not near sunrise or sunset. You should try and keep it as far back or away from the prop espesially on a cloudy day. This is the 640X480 model.

Low light and prop bad result.

Low light and having the prop to close to the camera resulted in poorer results.
