New Project Flys!

Just wanted to post a thread with the new format, so I thought I would discuss the first flight of my new project. I've been doing some ARFs lately (sorry Dereck ), and this is no exception. I took a Great Planes Giant Scale Ryan STA (83 inch span, 1000 sq. in. wing) and stuffed two Astro 40 FAI motors on a 3.5:1 beltdrive with a 16x10 APC prop and 36 cells (CP2400) into it. I have not weighed it, but I would estimate it is about 15 pounds (give or take a SkaT or two). Max current is about 45 amps for an input power of about 1620 watts. Power loading is about 100 watts per pound (probably more like 75 W/lb. considering efficiency losses). Wingloading is 34.5 oz. per sq. ft. (modest for something this big).

I put larger, more scale-like wheels (Du-Bro 1/4 scale Cub wheels) and a Goldberg 1/4 scale tailwheel assembly on it to help ground handling on our dirt runway and improve appearance.

The thing flys great, very scale speed and maneuvers. It does make our current 250 foot runway seem quite small. The fuselage and empenage construction is very light. The wing seems more robust. The wing has a lot of wood in it for the landing gear and this may account for much of the weight.

This all reminds me of the term, "Flying Overcast". That is one big plane! I saw one Bob Ortman made from a Sig kit a few years back. He used an Astro geared 90 and 36 cells. If memory serves me it was right around 42 oz./ft. It flew magnificantly and always drew the crowds applause when it landed safetly. There was a picture on Viper Model Products web page but the page is there no more. Hey Vic, where are you?

Good job! It's nice to see someone else has also done this conversion.

I've been flying my STA for several months now. My set up is a bit different than yours. I'm running an Astro 60 with a 2.66:1 belt drive (Modelair-tech) and 36 RC-2400's.

I still have some minor cosmetic details to finish (Wing struts and the like) before I call it "done". Flight times are still being cut short as I need to confirm power consumption. Last time I landed after about 4 minutes with over 1400 mah left in the 2400 mah pack. I only use full throttle for take-off and climbs, and generally fly at less than 50% power.
